How much food should my 9-month-old small breed puppy eat each day?

I usually use the rule of thumb of 1 cup per 20 pounds (~9kg). But with puppies, if they are really active and thin then they may need more. Some puppies are nibblers and don't want to eat that much and that is ok as long as he is eating, growing properly, and not too thin. I hope this helps!

Each food varies in the amount of calories per cup so the feeding amounts will vary. He will roughly need about 1/4-1/2 cup per day. Because he is so small, it is important to have food available to him at all times. Very small puppies can have difficulty regulating their blood sugar levels. Charlie needs around 300-400 calories per day for his weight and age (considering he is a puppy) so I would adjust the cups per day keeping this in mind. Hi there. I would recommend feeding both, but make sure it's a diet made for small breed dogs and is high quality. There are a variety of brands available, some good ones are Royal Canin, Natural Balance, Taste of the Wild but you may also want to ask your vet's advice so they can make a recommendation based on your pet's needs. Any brand is fine, I like Purina, Hill's and Royal Canin, You can feed her dry, dry mixed with canned or all canned. Whatever she will eat. Be sure she is feeling ok and doesn't have a fever or abnormal vaginal discharge. If she is refusing to eat she should see a vet to be sure she doesn't have an infection. Great question! Luna should be fed three times a day, morning, afternoon, and evening. Take the daily allotment recommended on her food bag, and divide it into three equal portions. When she is six months old, she can be fed twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

As a young Shih Tzu puppy, I'm assuming that Luna is under 3 pounds. Based upon that estimated body weight and her age, the chart recommends feeding 1/4-3/4 cups per day, divided into smaller meals. Small breed puppies really need to eat 3-4 times per day, if possible, because they can easily develop hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) if they do not eat frequently, which can lead to extreme weakness and seizures in severe cases. Try to feed Luna in the morning, when you get home from work, and again at bedtime, giving her about 1/8 cup per meal. If possible, try to look for a dog walker, pet sitter, or neighbor to feed her and let her outside midday. I hope that all goes well!
