New 9-month-old dog: What vaccinations, training, and care are needed?

Hi there! Congratulations on your new pup :) If she hasn't had anything done yet, she will need a vet visit for her first DAPP vaccine (for distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza) as well as a general wellness check-up. She should also have a fecal exam for parasites, and should be dewormed if any are found. She's also old enough to start on heartworm prevention if this is a problem in your area - the vet should be able to advise you if this is needed. After that, she will need to have her DAPP vaccine boostered every 3-4 weeks until she's 16 weeks or older. She will also need a rabies vaccine at 16 weeks. Other vaccinations, such as Lyme disease, leptospirosis, or Bordetella (kennel cough) may also be recommended depending on what is common in your area and her risk of exposure. Your veterinarian should discuss this with you at her check-up visit, and will let you know if any of these vaccines are needed.

Make sure she has vaccines including DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza) and rabies. Depending on her age, the vet the can tell you her vaccination schedule. Spay her before she goes into her first heat (around six months of age) to significant reduce the risk of her developing mammary tumors and eliminate the chance of her developing a pyometra later in life. Put her on a good flea and tick prevention program, make sure to deworm her, and give her heartworm protection. I would have your pup seen by a vet this week to start all of these things to keep her healthy :-)

I would recommend taking your new family member to a vet for a good exam. It is always important to have a new patient looked at to make sure there are no congenital defects like heart murmur, umbilical hernia or additional issues. your vet can discuss vaccines but typically in the united states we start with distemper parvo at 6 weeks and booster every 3-4 weeks until they are 16 weeks old. congrats on the cutie

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Congratulations!! Bruno is adorable! Bruno needs to start his puppy vaccines. He should receive a DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo and parainfluenza) vaccine every 3-4 weeks starting around 7-8 weeks of age until he receives two past 12 weeks. He should get his rabies vaccine between 12-16 weeks. He can start being dewormed as well. Having him dewormed and Rabies vaccination will protect your family. Keep up with his vaccinations into adulthood as they do have expiration dates. Deworm yearly. I recommend puppy food until 1 year of age. I like Purina proplan, hills science diet and Royal Canin. As a puppy his energy level is like a new born. Play for a bit then sleep. Around 4 months they are awake more. So playing with him when awake and 2-3 walks a day are appropriate. Primo will need to go to a veterinary clinic. There, a veterinarian can perform a complete physical exam to confirm good health before vaccination. Core vaccines include distemper/parvo combination and rabies vaccines. She will need 3 combination vaccines spaced 3-4 weeks apart. A rabies vaccine can be given now and repeated next year at this time. She should also be dewormed and tested for heartworm then placed on the appropriate monthly preventatives against fleas, ticks, heartworm and intestinal parasites.

Congrats on the new dog! She should be seen by a vet for a wellness exam, and will definitely need her distemper/parvovirus combo vaccine (Dhpp) and her rabies vaccine. I also recommend a heartworm test and fecal test to check for parasites, and get her started on both heartworm prevention and a good flea&tick prevention.
