Why is the young female cat I'm feeding still not gaining weight?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jastin. First, I would have her evaluated by her veterinarian to determine if she is in fact underweight or just small in stature. Some perfectly healthy cats are petite and do not grow to the size typical of the breed. However, there are numerous disease that can affect weight gain and growth. You want to ensure there is not a medical issue that needs addressing. In the meantime, ensure that she is eating kitten food as this will be higher in calories, fat and protein. It will aid in growth. Offer her canned food as well to supplement her dry kibble. This will help her to take in extra calories. I hope this information helps!

Lack of growth and failure to gain weight in a kitten can be due to a number of medical causes- viral or bacterial infections and parasitic infections could be potential causes among others. I would recommend having the kitten seen by a veterinarian for an exam and assessment. You may wish to bring a fresh fecal sample to the vet appointment in case your vet wants to test the kitten's stool. I would recommend that you have Lily examined by a vet to see if there is a medical cause for her being underweight. Sometimes there can be low levels of protein being lost to the intestines or through the kidneys that will cause inability to gain weight. It may or may not be seen with other symptoms, like vomiting, diarrhea, or urinary symptoms. Baseline blood work and urinalysis is important, and if the protein is low then additional testing may be indicated.

Most cats gain about a pound a month, so at 3 months old Chichi should be around 3 pounds. I would be concerned about intestinal parasites or potentially a bacterial or viral infection. There also could be a congenital problem going on since she is so young. I would also make sure she is on good quality kitten food and offer her both canned and dry. Sometimes I will heat the canned food in the microwave to make it smell more pungent and hopefully entice the kitten to eat more. I do think having her evaluated by your vet, dewormed and potentially have some further testing is the next best step. Good luck with her!

Try to offer Xena wet kitten food, warmed up in the microwave. On the photo she does not look so skinny, however, if you think she is too skinny I suggest you take her to a veterinarian for an exam. She may have a chronic condition that keeps her from gaining weight. Also, I see that she is not spayed. Cats stay in heat for a long time when they do not meet a tomcat. This can cause them to be stressed and lose weight or not gain weight. It may be a good idea to have her spayed. Best to have her examined by your vet.

I would recommend having some blood work performed on your cat. Hyperthyroidism is a common disease in middle aged to older cats that causes an increase metabolism so cats are often very hungry but unable to gain weight. I would also recommend having your vet check a fecal sample to ensure that Koda does not have any intestinal parasites as this can cause weight loss as well. I hope this helps. Taking in more calories is the only way to gain weight. Knowing the number of a pet's weight doesn't really tell us if they are healthy.
