Is old cat insulin recommended by my vet a year ago still safe?

The problem with insulin is that it cannot handle temperature variations. There is a small chance that it may still be ok, however it would be better to replace it with a new bottle to make sure Buddy is getting his proper working dose. If you are measuring blood glucose yourself at home, then you can measure his blood glucose before giving him his shot and then 6 hrs after giving him his shot. If the insulin is not working any more due to having been out of the fridge, then he will have a blood glucose value the same or higher than the first measurement. If his Blood glucose is lower and close to his usual low glucose level then the insulin is still good. However, I would recommend replacing the bottle with new insulin.

While certain human insulins can be used in cats, it is never recommended to change your cat's insulin yourself. Please do not use any insulin that isn't specifically prescribed by your vet as you could go great harm to Daja, which could potentially be fatal.

Hello. The danger of using expired insulin is that it may not work. Unless you are testing Fargo's blood glucose twice a day, you will have no idea if his diabetes is wildly out of control until you begin to see signs of uncontrolled disease. Not all medications stop working the minute you reach the labeled expiration date, but insulin is one medication I would not take a chance with. Hi, you would probably need to go through a consultation as this allows several messages and much more in depth advice. Important information such as when was she first diagnosed and what dosage of insulin she was started on and if she had any blood tests afterwards and what they indicated. What was her initial weight and how is her weight doing. What do you normally feed her and what times. Is she allowed to go outside, what other medications is she on. There are lots of things to consider and a face to face examination is always advisable at least once every six months. However in the short term, you could have a consultation with one of the experts here, hope this helps !

As long as it wasn't over 86 F for and extended period of time, it should still be fine. Certain types of insulin can be kept at room temperature for up to 6 weeks. If you are concerned in any way, discard the bottle and get a new one from your veterinarian or local pharmacy.

It sounds like Kosey's glucose is getting under control pretty well this time around as well which is great news. If you are ever worried the glucose is too low the safest thing to do is to not give any insulin so I think you did the right thing. It sounds like at this time the 5 units may be too much and you can start giving lower doses. To be sure this is the right thing for Kosey I would recommend having a glucose curve done at your vet (where multiple blood glucose readings are taken throughout the day). You may have done this in the past but it can be helpful to do it again while trying to regulate your cat. Good luck!
