My cat needs B12 shots. Where can I get vitamin B12 for cats?

B12 will support nervous system, GI system and immune system function. It may also stimulate a cat's appetite to some degree. B12 may be of benefit to cats with intestinal lymphoma. Since it is a water soluble vitamin, it is considered very safe to use. Discuss use and a dose with your veterinarian or a veterinary oncologist familiar with your cat's medical history and health status.

No it is not safe to give your cat Vitamin B human grade b/c this would overdose him. In fact Vitamin B12 is not absorbed readily by mouth and must be given by injection to pets. This also isn't much of an appetite stimulant, but mostly helps with intestinal malabsorption. I would suggest that you ask your vet for anti-nausea medication (Cerenia) which is actually labeled to use for cats with kidney problems that have decreased appetite. It also help with nausea, which in turn can increase his appetite. Usually we do end up giving some sort of supplementation to cats with severe IBD. However if their intestines are not absorbing things normally often we have to get the supplementation as injections. This is something your veterinarian could do or even teach you how to do. I recommend contacting them to set this up.

I'm not aware of a test to measure folic acids in cats, however we do routinely measure folate levels on more advanced blood work, such as the gastrointestinal panels that can be run at Texas A&M university's GI lab. Low folate levels are indicative of chronic small intestinal disease in cats, and rather than supplement B vitamins I would advise pursuing the exact diagnosis. Possibilities include inflammatory bowel disease, food allergies, or intestinal lymphoma. This will likely require endoscopy and biopsies of the small intestine to get an accurate diagnosis.

Hello. At this point in time, there is no credible information concerning carcinogenicity and Vitamin B12. Long term studies in animals have just never been done. In any situation where you have co-morbidities, in this case IBD & skin cancer, you & your veterinarian have to decide if the risk of one possible problem outweighs the benefit it gives for the other problem. Since there is no credible information associating B12 with cancer growth, & it is controlling Bugger's intestinal symptoms, you must decide about continuing the supplement. Hello, thank your question about Kianti. Based on the symptoms and the low B12 that you report I would be concerned that Kianti could have underlying GI disease. If he hasn't had one already I would recommend pursuing an abdominal ultrasound so that the characteristics of his GI tract can be evaluated. Inflammatory bowel disease is a not uncommon condition in cats that can lead to chronic vomiting. This is usually diagnosed by ultrasound and can be managed with diet and other medications such as steroids depending on the severity of the disease. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. With IBD, I would also recommend using B12 supplementation such as Cobalequin. Cobalequin is available online and is easy to get. This is basically a B12 supplement and is extremely bioavailable even in the presence of GI disease such as IBD. A different diet such as a hydrolyzed protein diet (a prescription diet) may also be helpful. You will need a prescription for a hydrolyzed diet and your veterinarian can provide this for you. I would try these things and see if they help at all with the soft stool / diarrhea / poor appetite.
