What's the deworming process for my underweight cat with pyrantel?

What an adorable kitten!! Each ml of the drug contains 50mg of the pyrantel base, and the dose for pyrantel pamoate is 5mg/kg. Here is how to figure it out: Body weight in pounds divided by 2.2 gives you the body weight in kg. For example, a 12 pound cat is 5.45 kg. Then, take the kg weight and multiply it by 5 -- in the example above, the 12 pound (5.45 kg) cat would get 27.27 mg of the pyrantel. Since each ml contains 50 mg, take 27.27 and divide by 50......27.27/50 = 0.54 ml. 12 pound cat = 0.54ml 10 pound cat = 0.45ml 2 pound cat = 0.09ml Be sure to dose them again in two weeks to make sure all the worms are killed. You can try to give her an over the counter dewormer. Make sure it is for cats and okay for 8 weeks and older. Depending on the type of worms she has and the type of dewormer you give will depend on whether or not they will go away. Unfortunately, there are some types of worms that will need prescription dewormer to get rid of them. Most common types of worms are tapeworms and roundworms, but there are several other types. I would deworm now and repeat in 3 weeks or whatever the label says. If she is continuing to expel worms in her feces or she isn't gaining weight, I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look at her to ensure she doesn't need a stronger dewormer and/or other medications. Intestinal parasites can be picked up from the environment. If this is a tapeworm you saw (looks similar to a grain of rice), fleas can transmit tapeworm to cats. I would recommend treating Venus with a product called Profender, which will treat intestinal parasites including tapeworm. I would also consider using a flea and tick preventative such as Revolution or Frontline. I would also consider bringing a stool sample to a veterinarian to help diagnose what kind of intestinal parasites these could be. I hope this helps! Many times you will not see intestinal parasites until the animals are critically sick. It's recommended to deworm young puppies and kittens every two weeks for at least three cycles, due to the lifecycle of the parasites. I would recommend getting a product labeled for kittens such as pyrantel pamoate. Make sure you weigh them and get accurate weights to dose the medication. As soon as you are able I do still recommend a veterinary exam as they will need vaccines, feline leukemia testing and there are other parasites that the pyrantel may not address. Look in your area as there are often low cost vaccination clinics available through pet stores or feed stores if a full service clinic is not possible. Also check with your local veterinarian as many times they may offer a rate for a litter of kittens versus charging each animal individually. I would give Muezza Panacur. It's a three day course of treatment, and she will need another course of treatment two weeks after the first ends. After that, she should be dewormed monthly until she is six months of age, and then she should be dewormed every three months. The amount to give her is based on her weight, and the instructions on the bottle of Panacur will tell you how much to give her. I hope this helps!

For a kitten this young, you can use Pyrantal pamoate which is available over the counter. The bottle will have all the details as to how much to give. I would recommend repeating this in 2 weeks. Your cat is beautiful! Albendazole and mebendazole will also kill hook worms. Levamisole has demonstrated activity against hook worms, however a dose regimen has not been established. Can you ring your veterinarian again to ask him to prescribe a different wormer for your cat? Maybe he knows an effective dosage for Levamisole against hookworms in cats. We do not have such a dosage recommendation here as we do not use Levamisole for cats principally because of the narrow therapeutic index.
