Can I safely stop prednisone for my senior cat with cancer?

It depends how long he was on it. If he was on it for less than a week, you can stop it cold turkey. If it was longer than that, you can respectfully tell the vet that you are concerned about iatrogenic (meaning medical treatment caused the issue) Addison's disease (underactive adrenal gland). It is best to decrease the dose by 1/2 every 3-5 days until Nugget is receiving 0.5 mg every other day for at least 3 doses. In the mean time, Nugget might do well with Buprenorphine, another pain medication that is safe to use while decreasing the prednisolone. Please discuss this with Nugget's veterinarian, but do not stop the pred. cold turkey.

Do not suddenly take him off the steroids, you should work with the local vet to taper him off of them if you do not want him to be on them. Give them a call to discuss a schedule to taper them off. Your vet has all the particulars on your cat's condition, so for me just to say its OK to start cutting back on a medication without having any information on why the medication was started in the first place would not be right & may be harmful to your pet. I am sorry your dog is suffering from lymphosarcoma. He will need to take the prednisone for the rest of his life as that slows down the cancer. There is no need to wean him off. You will need to discuss this with your veterinarian.

Given her age, steroid side effects from long term use tend to become less of a risk if the benefits are clearly improving her quality of life. Depending on the nature of the growth, low level chemotherapy medications may provide an opportunity to halt growth or even reduce the mass but this would require assessment by a specialist

Pets can be weaned off steroids but it will need to be very slow since she has been on the steroids for so long. I don't recommend to begin weaning Lady Purr until you speak with your veterinarian about the protocol they want for Lady. You may ask if email is an option.
