The spraying is likely a territorial response to a cat outside. It doesn't really mean he wants to breed, just that he can sense another cat in his area and he is marking his territory. This can also occur due to perceived stresses in the house, such as a new family member, moving things around, etc. I agree, hormone suppression could have many consequences, and could have life-threatening side effects. Neutering is the best way to stop territorial marking behaviors, but it will not stop it in all adult cats. Neutering will not have an effect if the spraying is caused by stress or medical disease (such as urinary bladder stones).
