My neutered male cat sprays walls. Why and how can I stop him?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Bubba. Yes, it is possible and this could be behavioral or medical in nature. It's a little early for a behavioral spraying but he could be having a medical problem that is contributing to this. Spraying means that he is hitting walls, vertical surfaces. If he is only hitting the flood or horizontal surfaces, this is just urinating inappropriately. I would advise getting him evaluated by your veterinarian. He may be having a problem with FLUTD or FIC. Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease or Feline Interstitial Cystitis. This has many causes including stress, infection, urinary crystals/stones which all lead to bladder inflammation among other changes. Your veterinarian will want to examine her and perform some tests including a urinalysis to see if there are signs of a medical problem. Sometimes blood tests are required to make sure the kidneys and internal organs are functioning properly. Once a diagnosis is made there are various ways to treat this including drugs to treat the stress, infection (if any), and the inflammation. Sometimes a special diet is advised if crystals are present. Or even surgery if urinary stones are actually present depending on the type of stones and how big/how many there are. Behavioral problems are assumed if the medical tests come back normal. These problems can be addressed by neutering, some medications and retraining the kitten/cat to use the litter box consistently again. Your veterinarian can help you assess all of this and make a sound treatment plan to get Bubba back on track. They may recommend neutering him soon. Good luck

If Tango is not neutered, this needs to be done. Males who are not neutered spray to mark territory and neutering them tends to stop the behavior. Some neutered males do still spray and this can be related to infections in the bladder or stress. Veterinarians will examine the urine of these cats to look for infection and provide correct treatment. There is treatment available for infections and stress but you have to determine which one is the cause. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

If he's living with other cats who do not like him, that will stress him out. Most urinary tract "infections" in non-geriatric cats are not caused by bacteria (antibiotics kill bacteria) but inflammation caused by stress. This is called feline idiopathic cystitis. Male cats also seldom have a bacterial cystitis as the urethra is much longer than a female's urethra and therefore bacteria would have to travel much farther to get into the bladder. It could be he has feline idiopathic cystitis, so I would take him into the vet. If he does have it, the vet can prescribe prednisone. It takes the inflammation which in turn takes the pain, and it is also a diuretic which helps flush the bladder. I hope this helps!

It's too early to know. Spraying generally occurs on a vertical surface where as inappropriate urination occurs on a horizontal surface. If Zeno has not yet been checked for a bladder infection, I recommend to have this done to help rule out a medical cause. If the veterinarian thinks this is behavioral, there are a few factors to adjust. Cats are sensitive to the type of litter, size of the box and location of the box. If you have more cats, you need 1 litter box per cat + 1 additional box. You should also have a litter box on every floor of the house. If you have other cats or dogs, if they can access the litter box, it may cause Zeno to be afraid that he could be trapped in the box. Cats are a prey species in the wild and they still retain those instincts. Clean the soiled areas with a good enzymatic cleanser. This will to get rid of any smells. There are things you can do at home to help to keep Zeno relaxed and that may help to ensure good litter box habits. Most cats response best to combination therapy. The veterinarian can also prescribe medications which can help with house soiling. No, there isn't. If you have multiple cats, keep a litterbox per cat plus an additional box in a "neutral" area of the house. Try litterbox attractants. You can find them in most pet stores or at www.pet360.com. Consider pheromone sprays or collars to decrease any stress or anxiety. If he can see out a window, draw the blinds to restrict his view. He could be seeing an outdoor cat that he perceives as a threat. Use a small animal repellent along the border of your property. Use an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle to thoroughly clean sprayed areas.

I cannot tell you for certain whether the spraying is associated with the current urinary issue or if it is a behavioral issue. If I had to guess, I would say it is likely related to his current medical situation. You need to talk to your vet about this as they have all his medical information that I do not have. I'm also assuming he has bladder crystals and not stones? If he has stones then he would need surgery to remove them and that may be why the urinary is bloody. You need to clarify that with your vet.
