How to stop my cat from going out at night and keep it safe?

The main reason for letting your kitty out only during the day is that cats tend to be run over in the early hours of the morning when people rush to work, and coyotes tend to eat cats at night (other predators too. Feed your cat in the morning and at night, associate a call with the feed ("come Eat" or something similar) and that way she will come in when it is time.

Since Jerry gets into fights when let outside I would definitely recommend keeping him as an indoor kitty. To help decrease his tendency to roam I would recommend having him neutered. You should also increase your interactions with him by doing things such as playing with a laser pointer and grooming him. I have 5 cats and live in the same kind of environment. Our cats are also inside outside cats and I can tell you how we manage: 1) we feed twice a day wet food and call the cats for it. They come running for their food, we use the same call every time. This ensures that your cats come home when you call them. 2) Our cats are to be inside at night. ie we do not let them out after the evening feed. 3) they can go out if they wish, after the morning feed. Most predators hunt at dusk and dawn. So this minimizes the opportunity for contact of the cats with predators. If you can replace door handles with door knobs, the cats cannot open the doors anymore. We have been doing this for 12 years now, and have not lost a cat yet.

This will depend on whether you want your kitty to be an indoor only cat or an indoor/outdoor cat. If you do not want him an outside cat you will just have to bear with it. He will eventually stop wanting to go out. You can also make a cat enclosure outside, so he can get at least the illusion of being outside. If you don't mind that your kitty goes outside, you can take him out for a walk in the yard or garden and then bring him in again. extend the trips every day. Make sure you do not free feed him then, but feed him canned food in the morning and evening calling him by name. That way he will come home when you call him. Make sure he stays inside at night.

While it can be difficult sometimes to turn an indoor/outdoor cat to one who stays strictly indoors, I think that Ray is young enough that you should give it a try if you're concerned about his safety. You could look into putting up an enclosure (sometimes called a 'catio') so he can still spend some time outdoors.

Start now with closing the cat door at night and keeping Kitter in with a litter box available. After a few days or a week keep him inside only. That way he will adjust before the stress of moving. Most cats naturally use the litter box but you may want to confine him to a smaller area with the box at night when he's in. Use plain litter without fragrance and clean it daily and fully empty it and scrub it with mild dish washing soap weekly. Cats are fussy and if the box is dirty they can start going out of the box. Also pick up bath mats and laundry so he doesn't start urinating on those. He should be fine, most cats adjust well. Make sure you play with him a lot and he may enjoy a cat tree since he is probably used to more exercise when he's outside.
