My senior indoor cat hates vets. Does she need her booster shot?

Hi there, I would talk to your vet and see what they are comfortable based on her health status. If the place you are moving requires vaccines, they may also require boosters or a written letter from your vet stating that she doesn't need the boosters. Those side effects are more common with chronic long term use. One to two doses prior the appointment will provide mild sedation and help calm her for the visit. You can try feliway spray. You spray a towel for the carrier and place a towel on top to help keep her covered

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lily. Vaccines can result in lethargy. I would discuss this with her veterinarian at her next appointment. She may benefit from some pain medication in case she is uncomfortable after her shots. If she experiences vomiting after her vaccines, this is a sign of a reaction. Her veterinarian will need to know this information as well. Even if she is indoor only, vaccinations are necessary for her. I hope this information helps!

I am so, so sorry to hear about Grace. I know how hard it is to lose a pet, and how difficult it is to make the decision to let them go. It is very unlikely that the FVRCP booster had anything to do with her decline, though I understand how coincidental it appears to be. It is very common for veterinarians to give this shot to older pets and even to immunocompromised animals, as they are the most at risk for the diseases the shot protects against. Without knowing her complete history, it does sound like she had some other issues brewing even before she had the vaccine. Most pets that have a true vaccine reaction exhibit those symptoms within a few hours - not over several months. I am so terribly sorry that you had to see Grace at her sickest, but I know that you did everything you could for her, and that she had the best care right up until you made that difficult decision. Please take comfort in knowing that making the decision to euthanize our pets when they are in intractable pain, though one of the hardest decisions we ever have to make, is the last great gift that we can give them. I hope that the sorrow eases with time, and my thoughts are with you and your family.

Vaccines are not age dependent but health dependent. Your vet should do blood work first due to her age to make sure there are no underlying health issues prior to a vaccine. If she is healthy and at risk and has not had one in the last 3 years, then I would reccomend getting the vaccine If there are other problems, then I would wait on any vaccines and address the other problems

Hello, thank you for your question about Priscilla. In general most veterinarians do not recommend the feline leukemia vaccine unless the cat goes outside. I would still recommend still getting the FVRCP (or feline 3 in 1 vaccine) for Priscila; these viruses/diseases can be life threatening. Additionally, having Priscila dewormed is also still recommended, as cats can get a GI parasite infection through contact with mosquitoes and other insects. Hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do NOT recommend vaccinating a kitten who seems anything other than healthy. If Brittany has an infection or depressed immune system, she may not be able to mount a proper response to the vaccine so it may not be worth doing. Or worse, it could be more than her immune system can handle at this point and it could make her feel even worse. Save yourself the trouble and wait until Brittany is feeling 100%.
