My senior cat has kidney disease & pink urine. How can I afford a vet?

CJ really needs a vet visit when you can manage it. In older cats hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, inflammatory bowel disease are possibilities and require bloodwork to diagnose. The good news is many of the conditions can be treated or managed but you need a diagnosis in order to determine the best treatment. Thanks for visiting Petcoach. Poor kitty. I have to agree here, that if there is still gross blood in the urine, then additional testing is needed. I would highly recommend starting with a radiograph to check for urinary stones. However, a more inclusive test that is more cost effective, would be to do an ultrasound. Yes an ultrasound is more expensive than a radiograph, but if you still dont find an answer with the radiograph, an ultrasound would be needed. The ultrasound can not only tell us if there are urinary bladder stones, but it can look at the urinary bladder in 2D to determine if there are any structural abnormalities or growths inside the bladder. It is the best way to go here, especially after trying to treat this medically twice now. To help with finances though, I would suggest trying out for CareCredit. This is most definitely an emergency. Cats can pass away very quickly if they are unable to urinate. Please have Kenny seen by a vet right away. Some veterinary hospitals will allow payment plans. You can also apply for CareCredit - a form of medical/veterinary financing accepted by many veterinary hospitals. Some shelters and SPCAs also offer discounted pet care, I'd suggest trying to call around.

Causes of inappropriate urination with blood are: urinary tract infection, stress cystitis, crystals in the urine, bladder stone, or a bladder tumor. It is likely that Nina has a bacterial UTI but there are many other causes for her issues. With her history of kidney issues she should be examined and a urine sample should be tested before starting her on antibiotics. Using antibiotics inappropriately builds resistance. I recommend taking her to the Vet and trying to not let her urinate for several hours (lock her in a room with out a box) or collect a urine sample to bring with you. If she does have a UTI your Vet can appropriately dose the Clavaseptin and tell you how long based on her specific infection. I wish Nina a speedy recovery!

I forgot to mention that they will also require a urinalysis in addition to the blood test in order to confirm kidney malfunction exists, before proceeding with the recommended treatments that you mentioned.

Poor kitty. Cats can have blood in their urine as a result of stress, bladder stones or even an underlying urinary tract infection. As long as he is urinating readily with no excessive straining, vocalization, or lethargy, he shouldn't be in any immediate danger. I would recommend taking him in to your vet within the next day or two to have a urinalysis done so that he can ge properly diagnosed and treated. Until then, continue to monitor him for any of the symptoms that I mentioned above, which would warrant an emergency visit to the vet. Otherwise, a regular vet visit is appropriate.
