Senior cat with kidney disease can't walk. Is he passing or injured?

I'm sorry you and KJ are going through this. It sounds like he is very unwell, and he is likely in a lot of pain. Please have him seen by a veterinarian immediately. Your vet will be able to perform a physical exam to help figure out what is going on, and offer treatment options. If your vet determines that euthanasia is a reasonable option, they will let you know. It may well be the case that euthanasia is recommended, but it's impossible to tell without an exam. There are a number of factors that could have lead to KJ's current condition, but it is essential that you get KJ to a vet immediately so that he does not suffer.

This is a very difficult decision but moving such an elderly and infirm cat would not be advisable and could precipitate progression of kidney disease. Euthanasia is a very valid option in this case and will ensure he does not suffer from any stress or upheaval

I'm sorry to hear that this is going on with Virtue. My biggest concern would be that he has a developed a blood clot that has disturbed the blood flow to the back legs. This is unfortunately one of the common side effects of kidney disease and hypertension. I would recommend taking Virtue in to see your vet for a recheck as soon as possible. They will need to check his kidney values and see if they have worsened, check a blood pressure and may recommend starting Virtue on additional medication, such as aspirin, to help with the clots. Poor Oscar, I suspect he might be suffering with kidney disease. This is a common cause for increase thirst and urination in elderly cars. In order to stop progression of kidney disease you should not give him metacam anymore and opt to have a different form of pain relief. It is hard to answer your question, in a way his body is shutting down but it might take a week to get worse and another 3-5days for him to go. During those 5 days he will not eat, he will probably vomit and be in pain as not allowed to have/not taking his medications. My suggestion is to try to do something with your vet to help him feel better and if he should continue to deteriorate, not eat /drink a lot then let him go peacefully. Poor Squeak does sound like he's ill, and has a lot of things going on with him at the moment. I think you should take him into the vet. Unfortunately, dying is not a gentle or pain-free process, and he could suffer greatly while you are waiting for him to pass. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, and a urinalysis to see how his organs are functioning and to diagnose what is causing his symptoms. If you really are against taking him to a vet and want to let him go peacefully, I would call to see if there is a vet in your area that does house calls, and they can come to your home to put him to sleep. That is a way of letting him go without pain and in peace, and it would be much kinder to have that done for Squeak than allowing him to suffer until he has passed.

Having him euthanized is a valid option if his quality of life is not good. If he cannot control his bowels and is not able to eat, that is not a happy life for him. Older cats can have liver, kidney disease and diabetes that can cause illness. You may want to have a vet examine him to see what the treatment options maybe before making that difficult decision. They can tell you want to expect long term to see what his quality of life will be like if he starts on a treatment. You know him better than anyone, so you will be able to know best how happy he currently is.

Dying is not always a painless process, and with liver failure, he will be feeling pretty terrible. You can see that already with the fact that he isn't eating, is lethargic, and dehydrated. Starving is also very painful to an animal. With the signs you are mentioning, I honestly would be thinking it's time to consider letting him go peacefully via humane euthanasia. This will ensure that he passes peacefully without any further pain or suffering. There are vets who come to your house to provide this service, so this would allow you to have him pass in the comfort of his home. I would see if your vet makes house calls for euthanasia, or if there is a mobile euthanasia vet service in your area.
