My old cat is sick, losing weight, scared of vet. Should I take him?

I'm sorry to hear that your kitty isn't doing well. Before considering euthanasia, I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam and some basic lab work to find out what is causing these issues. Some problems, such as hyperthyroidism, are very treatable with medication once a diagnosis is made.

Squiggles need to see a vet. If he has lost that much weight my guess is he either has diabetes or kidney disease. He could also have a serious mouth/dental infection or even hepatic lipidosis. I'm sorry you think vets are expensive but there is a lot of overhead involved with running a vet clinic. The staff has to be paid, the utilities, all the medications, supplies and equipment. It is your responsibility to get him care when he is sick. Letting him suffer because of financial constraints is really not a good option. Not everything can be fixed at home. So, please get him evaluated by a vet and then you can go from there. If he has a severe disease and you cannot afford treatment then it would be best to humanely euthanize him.

Poor Garfield. At age 17 that is an awful lot going on and I'd be worried there is an underlying issue such as kidney or organ failure, disease, etc. Since he's so old and is having so many symptoms, it's best to bring him to your vet ASAP. They will likely want to run a few tests such as bloodwork or an X-ray to check his organ function, etc. If you can, bringing in urine or stool samples can also help with any testing and help streamline the process. Until you can get the vet, keeping him as comfortable as possible and keeping his eyes and nose clear with a clean washcloth can help. Some cats also do better eating if they can smell the food, so warming up his food or adding some boiled chicken that is smelly may encourage him to eat a little until you can be seen.

I'm so sorry G is so sick. I work for an home euthanasia service, so I face these kinds of questions frequently with my clients. I would look at G's quality of life in make the decision as to when to euthanize him. If he's in pain, losing weight, having diarrhea, detached, and head pressing, his quality of life isn't very good. When a cat is in constant pain, they will be suffering daily, and in my opinion, that is when it is time to let them go peacefully. It's never easy to say goodbye to a beloved pet, and they are often ready to go before we are ready to let them go. I am sorry to hear about Ernie's conditions. It certainly sounds like he has been through an awful lot and isn't feeling to well. Obviously without seeing Ernie in front of me, I can't give you my fully official opinion. However, if you feel that Ernie is no longer able to do the things he enjoys, can't eat a meal without being in pain, and is spending more time sleeping and hiding, it may be time to start seriously considering his quality of life. I know that this is a very personal and difficult decision, but sometimes it is the kindest and most humane decision you can make for your pet. All of the conditions you have named are incurable and are likely to progress. When in concert with one another, they may progress even faster. No one can make this decision for you, but I think you should do whatever you feel is right in your heart.

Even though Mango doesn't do well with travel, I would definitely take him into a vet immediately. He will not be feeling well and is likely distressed even though he's not showing signs of it. Cats can be very stoic when ill, and think about how you would feel if you had frequent diarrhea, was losing weight, and hardly eating. He could have something serious causing his symptoms such as irritable bowl disease or cancer. He needs veterinary care now because senior cats can easily get dehydrated and frequent diarrhea is enough to cause dehydration. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Having him euthanized is a valid option if his quality of life is not good. If he cannot control his bowels and is not able to eat, that is not a happy life for him. Older cats can have liver, kidney disease and diabetes that can cause illness. You may want to have a vet examine him to see what the treatment options maybe before making that difficult decision. They can tell you want to expect long term to see what his quality of life will be like if he starts on a treatment. You know him better than anyone, so you will be able to know best how happy he currently is.
