What's causing my senior cat's facial lesion that won't heal?

This look like it could be feline acne which is an infection of the skin. This can be very painful, but is not a terrible disease. The vet will clean and disinfect the skin and then prescribe some antibiotics for her. This is according what I could see on the photos, which was not very clear. That is a very nice kitty and you are taking good care of her

Poor thing! I'm sorry you guys are going through this. I wonder if this may be immune mediated, meaning that her immune system is malfunctioning and reacting inappropriately to damage the skin. Did the antibiotics help? If secondary bacterial infection is present, then antibiotics will be needed to clear the infection but may not address the entire problem. Some types of skin diseases such as pemphigus may result in this type of lesion. This condition often responds to steroids. If you aren't able to afford a biopsy, your vet may be willing to do a trial on steroids to see if it helps. The other concern for cause would be some type of cancer. Not necessarily that the wounds themselves are cancer, but that cancer elsewhere may be causing an inappropriate immune reaction leading to the current skin condition. I hope thats helpful for you. Hello. If your veterinarian has no cultured the lesion, it is time to do so. Mac may have a resistant bacterial infection, or perhaps, even a fungal infection that may require a change in medications. Another concern is there could be a foreign object that penetrated the skin & is causing these recurrent infections. A grass awn, or even a broken claw can basically disappear under the skin creating chronic infections. I would probably start with an x-ray to see if anything is visible & submit a sample for culture & sensitivity. Last resort would be to open the area, explore & possibility biopsy some of the tissue to understand why this is not healing. Ouch! Those look pretty painful. If the medication isn't working it may be a good idea to take a sample of the lesions to be sent out to a lab for testing to see if there is a more specific medication that can be used, or if there is another cause for the lesions. Some viral illnesses can also cause lesions, in which case antibiotics wouldn't work to treat the underlying cause, only to prevent secondary infection from forming. Since they are coming back and look pretty painful, additional examination and bloodwork is also a good idea to narrow down possibilities. Keeping your catch from biting at or scratching the lesions with an Elizabethan (cone) collar is also a good idea to help prevent further irritation while it tries to heal.

I think this question may be a repetition of the previous one with the link to the picture. .....The antibiotic probably cleared the mouth up from excess of bacteria and secondary infection, but that lesion may represent a cancer. A biopsy or fine needle aspiration of the lesion must be obtained to confirm or rule out this strong clinical suspicion and eventually define its malignancy. Another check up is needed.

Nonresolving skin lesions can be due to a variety of causes, including severe trauma and necrosis of the skin, a resistant bacterial infection, or an immune disorder, among others. If it is non-resolving, it may need surgical removal in order for the rest of the skin to heal, and a culture for a resistant infection and a biopsy can be done in order to determine further what may be going on.
