Why is my senior cat not eating food, only treats, and losing weight?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 15 years and 10 months old

My cat is about 15 years old (a rescue), neutered and declawed. She stopped eating her (dry) food about five months ago. She won't eat wet food or table food but will eat crunchy 'treats'. I know this isn't balanced or healthy as her only food, but I don't know what else to try. She has lost weight, but seems to be healthy otherwise. At her advanced age, she does sleep a lot, but she like to play and is otherwise active. Any suggestions as to what else I can do for her? Thank you

Appetite changes and weight loss in older cats are usually due to an underlying medical problem, rather than just "getting old." Some common possibilities would include chronic kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or dental problems.

Many of these issues are very treatable once a diagnosis is made, so I would recommend taking Poppy to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do blood work to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

There could be a medical reason behind why Freeway isn't eating as much as he normally does. It could be he's suffering from dental problems, a systemic illness, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, liver disease, or a number of other problems. Given that you moved into the new home back in March, I wouldn't expect unease with where he's living to start now, and because he is a senior cat, I would be more concerned that it's a medical problem causing it. Cats shouldn't go long without eating, as it causes a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment, so I would take him into a vet this weekend if the vet has normal business hours. Otherwise, I would take him in Monday. I recommend getting a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis. These tests will will help the vet identify if there is a medical problem causing his loss of appetite, and then the vet can discuss treatment options with you. I hope this helps!

My 18-year-old cat eats a lot but is losing weight. What's going on?

I would recommend taking Oliver Paul into for an exam by a veterinarian. They can do a full exam, and a geriatric blood work panel. They may also take his blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause weight loss in older kitties. It can also cause eye problems. Another common and treatable condition in older kitties is hyperthyroidism. They get benign (non-cancerous) tumors on their thyroid gland that causes them to produce too much hormone which up regulates their metabolism. They will eat a lot and continue to drop weight. My senior cat is thin, lethargic, and not eating. Is he sick?

These signs are probably not due to old age alone and there is likely something going on with Shadoe. Unfortunately, without a full physical exam and diagnostic testing, it is not possible to determine what could be causing these signs. However, lethargy and eating and drinking very little along with weight loss are very concerning signs that warrant a visit to the veterinarian. Here are some resources that will hopefully help you afford a vet for Shadoe: 1) You can see if your vet accepts payment plans. 2) Look for a low cost clinic in your area 3) Try to apply for Care Credit online (www.carecredit.com) 4) There is an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants (redrover.org) 5) Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website (bestfriends.org)

Why is my senior cat always hungry but losing weight? Hyperthyroidism?

When an senior cat is eating more frequently yet losing weight, this can be a sign of hyperthyroidism. With hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland is secreting too much hormone which causes an increase in the pets metabolism and subsequent weight loss. Have your vet check Hopes T4 levels to see if she is hyperthyroid and in need of medication to help stabilize her hormones so that she doesn't continue to waste away. This is easily diagnosed and treated with medication (i.e. Methimazole). Your vet will also want to run baseline bloodwork on your pet to make sure no other disease processes are there.

Why is my 17-year-old cat not eating, losing weight, and losing hair?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. So sorry your cat is having this issue. I suggest you get him to your vet for a check up and some blood testing. Thyroid disease is very common in older cats as is kidney disease and diabetes. All of these things can cause similar symptoms and all are easily diagnosed with simple blood testing. You need to realize that at 17 years old he is about 85 in human years. At this age, things start to fail and go wrong. You need to find out what is wrong so you know how to best treat him. Some things are very easily treated with daily medications. I don't think this is something you are going to be able treat at home without knowing what the underlying cause is. Hope this helps. Why is my older cat eating less? Is it a sign of a health problem?

It is probably not normal. I suggest you schedule an exam with your veterinarian for your cat. Your cat may have dental problems (gingivitis and/or tartar, tooth infections), diabetes or another endocrine disease. Oder kitties also often have problems with their kidneys. A thorough clinical exam and blood tests can at least rule out any serious disease that could cause eating less than usual.
