What's the difference: Royal Canin Urinary SO vs. Purina UR for cats?

I think this is a very good food for treating crystalluria, and there are some differences between this food and urinary foods by other companies like Hill's. One difference that comes to mind is the calorie content - Royal Canin SO tends to be lower in calories than Hill's c/d. You may want to ask your veterinarian about the Royal Canin SO Olfactory attraction food which is supposed to be more palatable for cats, or if Bean really seems to dislike it you could ask about switching to another therapeutic diet. There are no over the counter alternatives that are proven to prevent urinary crystals in cats.

From Royal Canin's website: "This diet is only suitable for healthy adult cats that do not have a urinary issue or a history of urinary problems. This food is not a replacement for a diet prescribed by your veterinarian." If Elbi has already had a urinary problem, I don't recommend considering switching to the urinary care food. Urinary S/O is designed to encourage more drinking, as well as neutralize the pH of the urine - both of those together tend to almost completely eliminate the chances of crystals forming.

There is dry and wet of this diet. It is a prescription diet so you will have to get a prescription from your veterinarian. I hope this helps! I believe you're referring to Royal Canines brand of urinary diet SO. In conjunction with appropriate medication SO is a great food to help prevent urinary tract infections. Lulu will likely need to be on this food for the rest of her life. Any changes to a non-urinary diet may trigger a recurrence of crystals or stones. If she does not resolve after a month of anabiotic's and diet, further diagnostic testing such as ultrasound or scoping of the bladder may be necessary to determine the cause of the urinary tract issues. My own dog is on Royal Canin SO and he does great, until my kids feed him the wrong food and then he has a flare up again. So please be sure to feed her only the prescribed diet. The prescription diets are formulated to treat for specific disease processes or conditions in pets. They are prescription only because they are not indicated for healthy pets with no issues and therefore need to be regulated, hence the prescription requirement. There isn’t just one specific ingredient in the food that makes it a prescription food per-say. The urinary diets are formulated with added salt, so this is what is causing the increase drinking and urination that your are seeing. This is done on purpose to help dilute the urine so that crystals don’t form. Most pets have to stay on this food lifelong because they are more susceptible to forming crystals and stones. Yes it is. That's because it helps dissolve crystals and has properties to increase urination and prevent further crystals from forming. If Coleman does have urinary crystals, I highly recommend feeding him this food.
