Why does my healthy rescue cat still have diarrhea after 10 weeks?

Stray cats can pretty nasty parasitic infections. I would check to see if the vet ran a fecal examination + a Giardia test. Both of these can pick up on many parasites that can cause persistent diarrhea. However, if these tests were already done and were negative, then additional testing may be needed to find other not so common causes of diarrhea like the one ran by Idexx. I would suggest going back to the vet for additional treatment and these additional tests if not done already.

There can be lots of causes for diarrhea or loose stools in a cat, including food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal lymphoma, among other things. If Vinnie is eating well and has a good activity level, I think it is ok to wait until things outside start to clear up. Vinnie may need to go on a hypoallergenic diet, try other prescription medications, have an abdominal ultrasound, or special blood work to determine what is going on.

The diarrhea could be caused by a number of things, including parasites, diet changes (such as the new diet you tried her on), toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, food sensitivity/allergy, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, and Panacur is generally used to treat intestinal worms, so I think there may be some confusion or miscommunication going on as to what is going on with Belle. I recommend you contact the shelter and clarify Belle's diagnosis with them, obtain her medical records, and have her seen by a vet for further diagnostics and treatment. Congratulations! It is good you brought a stool sample in. Some worms do not shed eggs often and do not respond to routine dewormers so I would put in the back of my mind that he may need a thorough stool panel done at a reference lab. Other thoughts include: stress colitis (especially if Onyx came to you very recently!), diet changes, bacterial overgrowth (typically respond to antibiotics and probiotics), and irritable bowel syndrome. I would ask your vet about basic diarrhea treatments and if that does not help, then I would want to pursue bloodwork and a send out stool panel. Poor Kila! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain.
