My recovering rabbit is energetic & eating fast. Is this good?

Unfortunately abscess formation in rabbits is quite common. I'm not surprised Runt is lethargic since there is a pretty reasonable chance that she has a fever. Those abscesses are going to have to be lanced and drained and Runt will then have to be placed on antibiotics and pain medication more than likely. Depending on how long it's actually been since Runt has had anything to eat or drink would be the way I would determine whether or not this is an emergency or if it can wait until your appointment. Rabbits cannot go very long without having something to eat because they end up getting something called gastric stasis which can unfortunately be deadly if untreated. If Runt has not been eating for 24 hours or more I would say you should go ahead and bring her somewhere now rather than waiting.

From what I can see in the picture, these bunnies are doing well. The things you are looking for are great - they have round bellies, they are warm, and they are clean. You can see in the photo that there is a more pale area visible on the belly - this is the stomach and it is full of milk! It is referred to as the milk line. This is a good thing to see on the bunnies, and when this is present it indicates that mom is doing a good job with the feeding. Please keep in mind that it is not uncommon for mother rabbits to only visit their babies once to twice per day. After the babies are weaned, I would recommend having the mother spayed as uterine cancers are very common in female rabbits. I hope this answers your question, and good luck with the new babies!

Hi, It sounds like Luna may just be tired from the increased activity earlier in the day. However, if her appetite and defecation decrease or her behavior is otherwise altered, then that could certainly be a sign of illness. I think it’s fine to wait and monitor her, as long as she keeps eating and defeating nornally. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to take her in to see her veterinarian. Good luck!

Continue syringe feeding him and medicating him. If you can get some Oxbow Critical Care for Herbivores, that would be recommended. Have him rechecked by your veterinarian when you can to rule out any complications from the procedure. If his teeth needed extensive work, the recovery period may be prolonged.

Based on what you are describing him I would be concerned about gastric stasis in your rabbit. This can be a common condition that occurs when a bunny stops eating. The stomach will fill with a lot of gas and the rabbit will be very painful and uncomfortable. If you are able to continue giving the critical care supplement I would recommend doing that. If Pepper stops eating that, continues to seem lethargic, or stops pooping, then you will need to take him into the vet to be examined because other medications will be needed to help restore GI motility. With this abrupt change in behavior I would be concerned that something is going on with Binky, like the early signs of an illness. Since he is still eating and drinking there is not much that can be done at this time. Ensure that Binky is still making stool. Also, watch him and his food intake very closely.
