My rabbit has snuffles again. Treat all rabbits or just the sick one?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 4 days old | 2 lbs

rabbits on baytril for 12 days, ran out of baytril to give, and could not get more as it is no longer being sold here. tried another enrofloxacin brand, it smelled like vinegar and gave the rabbits wet stool on day 2 so i stopped. one of the rabbits has started do develop snuffles symptoms again. but NOT THE OTHER RABBITS. q: do i give them all the medication or just the sick one? will he get reinfected from the others later? separation is NOT an option

Only give it to the sick one for now, if the second one starts showing symptoms then treat him as well. a good alternative to baytril is Septrin (trimetoprim sulfa), this should be easy to find in human pharmacies (children suspension).

Snuffles (Pasteurellosis) is very difficult to completely resolve in rabbits. The infection may go dormant, however it is likely to be with Biscuit for life. Baytril is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics in rabbits and one of the few that can safely be used. Ciprofloxacin and Trimethoprim Sulfa are two other antibiotics that could be dispensed by your vet. You can have your veterinarian swab Biscuit's nose or collect a sample of discharge to submit for culture and sensitivity. This may identify any other bacteria as well as the most effective antibiotic to use in treatment. Until then, continue to medicate him as directed by your veterinarian, make sure he is eating and drinking normally and keep him warm and as stress free as possible.

Snuffles in rabbits is caused by a bacteria called pasturella. The majority of pet rabbits carry this in their lungs and it is in times when the immune system is stressed that it tends to cause disease. Such as concurrent illness, surgery, age etc. For whatever reason the sick rabbit has developed snuggles, however, its friends likely already have the bacteria but are strong enough for it not to manifest as disease. Young bunny sneezing, pasteurellosis, Baytril not working. What to do?

So good of you to take on this little bunny! Pasteurella is very common in rabbits and most have it in their lungs, often a stressful event such as moving can lead to it causing an infection. It can be quite serious especially in a young or old rabbit. However, you are doing the right thing in having it treated. Antibiotics are limited in rabbits and baytril is a good choice for this type of issue. I cant comment on the dose as I di not know the weight of your rabbit or the concentartion, however, I imagine it is sufficient. It can take antibiotics a fair few days to start making an impact so it may just be a matter of time. I would suggest asking your et for an antinflammatory such as meloxicam also to help tge lungs. If the rabbut seems to be detetiorating do go back to the vet as he may require alternative treatment.

You are correct, she is probably suffering from an upper respiratory infection (Snuffles), she will need a course of antibiotic (Baytril) and some antibiotic eye drops for about 3 weeks, you can go to any regular vet, they can prescribe these medications for Berry.

If your bunny has nasal discharge and sounds congested, he may have an upper respiratory infection that may improve with an antibiotic that is safe for rabbits such as baytril. If there is no nasal discharge/congestion, he may have an environmental allergy, possibly to the bedding/hay in his cage. A trial of a non shaving bedding such as Care fresh (a cotton bedding) may help. Good luck!

My rabbit has snuffles, on medication. When should I see improvement?

Hello, and thank you for your question. It sounds like Snuggles has all the right medications to help resolve his Snuffles infection. I would give it a few more days to see improvement. If still no improvement by then, I would recommend taking him back to the vet. They may want to take a culture sample of his nasal discharge to check exactly what bacteria is present, or decide to switch his antibiotic type altogether. X-rays may also be recommended to rule out pneumonia, which is more serious and more difficult to treat. I hope this helps, and that Snuggles feels better soon!
