How to prevent leeches on my cat? Are there anti-leech medications?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Leeches can be used medically to help remove blood clots and reestablish circulation to areas of the body. If used properly by a veterinarian, they should not be able to enter into a dog's ear. I suppose it is possible for a leech in the environment to enter a dog's ear canal, however you should be able to see into the canal well enough to find one there. I hope this is helpful!

Hi, it is rare for cats to get lyme disease but they can become anemic from too many ticks as well as fleas. The best tick prevention out is called a Seresto collar. While they are more expensive than other flea collars, they last for months. You can order this online if no vets have it in your area. For now, pick the ticks off with tweezers, making sure to pinch from the base of the skin and pull hard to get the head. Some hair may come out with them and there may be a red spot. This will heal. It helps prevents fleas and intestinal parasites in cats. It is easy to use and very effective in cats. This is a prescription medication your can obtain through Jax's veterinarian. I haven't seen that before. It could possibly be a leech. I am not familiar with these in your part of the world, so it may be worth a call to a local vet to see if there is anything that needs to be done other than a thorough bathing in the groin area.

Hello and thank you for your question! Good question! As far as medication is concerned, there are a lot of very effective Rx mediations out there on the market for fleas. Your veterinarian will be able to prescribe you with a Rx medication. This is really the best way to treat and prevent fleas. As fas as at home remedies, dawn ship soap will help to kill adult fills, but will not take care of the life cycle of the flea (eggs or pupa) and is only a temporary solution. If the sores are infected, Moe really should be treated with antibiotics by his veterinarian. In the mean time, however, you can wash the sores with a mild soap and water and keep them clean. 3% hydrogen peroxide can help to keep the areas clean as well.
