My pregnant cow has diarrhea. What are safe treatment options?

In a pregnant dog it could be due to hormones, impending labor, from worms or diet change (most put pregnant dogs on puppy food). I would contact your vet for medications since she is pregnant, start a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice and add in a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. If Lucy is not fully vaccinated I would worry about viral infections as well. I wish you and Lucy the best!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Any medication you give a lactating dog will be passed through the milk to the puppy. I do not suggest any human medications and if her diarrhea is severe you should have her examined by your Vet and a fecal test ran to rule out intestinal parasites. It easily could be the food you are feeding as she should be eating a puppy food. I would try a bland diet of boiled chicken and hamburger with rice for a few says. A probiotic should be fine, I like Purina Fortiflora. I hope this helps!

It sounds like your cat has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon, resulting in an increase in the volume and frequency of stools. 

 Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites (most likely in a pregnant cat), dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. 

I would recommend taking your cat in to your vet to be examined. They will likely want to check a stool sample and may recommend some lab work, a dietary change, and/or antibiotics.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Cookie. She will need to see her veterinarian today. It will be very easy for her to become dehydrated from the vomiting and diarrhea. She may require medication to control her symptoms, but options are limited due to her pregnancy. If you haven't had it done already, x-rays will be taken to count the number of puppies she is expecting. This information will help you during to labor to know if she has had all the puppies or not. Hi there! I can absolutely understand your concern about your mama dog. I actually would probably not give Pen G to DJ for a few reasons. 1) the hemorrhagic diarrhea may be from abrupt “diet change” (thanks neighbor) and not from any organism. 2) even if it is from an organism, pen g only works on one of the 4 or 5 organisms I can think of that causes bloody diarrhea. 3) If she is close to labor, it is possible that residual antibiotic in the puppies systems or in the milk could cause diarrhea or yeast infections in the puppy. Instead, I would start a bland diet (1/3 plain cooked chicken, 2/3 plain cooked white rice) and start a probiotic such as Purina Forti-flora. If DJ does break with diarrhea, I recommend a prompt visit to your vet who can help you determine if the benefits of an antibiotic like pen-g outweigh the risks in her particular case.

Poor Willow! Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Nothing can happen through the skin please don' t worry. However, you always need to wash your hands and wear gloves when you handle his litter tray or your clothes which have diarrhoea on it. Make sure the house is clean etc normal hygiene rules. I would recommend to have him checked over so his diarrhoea can be treated, and he can be neutered, wormed so that everything is in order for when the baby arrives.
