My pregnant cat has brown discharge. Is this a medical emergency?

Hello, mild discharge during gestation is normal. As long as Shadow is otherwise eating, drinking, defecating, and urinating normally and she seems otherwise like her normal self, then I would continue to monitor her. If you ever see larger volumes of discharge or bleeding then I would definitely have Shadow evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps

Hello. As long as she seems to be acting fairly normal, this is probably just a normal discharge as the cervix begins to dilate. She should start delivering kittens in the next 24-48 hours. There is often a small amount of pink/watery vaginal discharge shortly before the cat goes into labour. If Kia is acting as normal, there is no vomiting and she has good appetite, you should monitor her at home. However, if there is any change and she becomes unwell, please take her to your local vets for a check.

The symptoms you described are common in cats in heat. But that isn't possible if she is currently pregnant. Discharge can occur before going into labor, but if it is greenish, she needs to see a vet ASAP. It's also possible she has an infection in her uterus or a false pregnancy. Only and ultrasound or x-rays with a vet will be able to tell which situation is going on.

Any vaginal discharge in a pregnant cat other than a transparent discharge is not normal. If you notice a vaginal discharge you need to visit the vet, as this may indicate that the cat has a problem which can result in an abortion. She could also have a urinary tract infection. But in any case, she should be seen by a veterinarian.

I would be extremely concerned that Lola has a pyometra. This is a life threatening infection of the uterus that requires immediate veterinary treatment. It would cause a creamy brown mucus discharge. A pyo is fatal without treatment, so I would take Lola into a vet right away. The vet can do a physical exam, blood tests, a urinalysis, and x-rays to diagnose she does have a pyo. If she does, spaying her in part of the recommended treatment. Please take her into a vet now.

The greenish discharge can indicate early separation of the placenta, and it's not considered normal in cats. It could be that one of the kittens could have separated early from its placenta, and I would take Mia into the vet now to get checked up to be safe. Best of luck.
