Why is my overweight cat having bloody diarrhea and peeing inside?

Hello. A cat cannot be constipated & have diarrhea at the same time. I think you are seeing Tiki strain, but this is from abdominal discomfort probably due to spasms in the gut, not from being constipated. There are all sorts of reasons for the diarrhea with blood, a bacterial infection, intestinal parasites, food intolerance, & less likely because of her age - neoplasia. The first thing to do is eliminate all fish from her diet. Go with a meat or poultry based diet. This can either be a dry kibble or wet food. Start her on a probiotic designed for cats. We have Proviable by Nutrimax & FortiFlora by Purina here. Next, have a sample of her stool examined by a veterinarian for the presence of intestinal parasites & then wormed with the proper medication. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach! It sounds as though Jax has some inflammation in his colon with the blood in his stool. With the constipation it may indicate not enough fiber or hydration in his diet. I would recommend switching the dog food to a food with a higher fiber content and trying to increase his water intake to see if that helps. Vetasyl capsules are something you can also try adding to the diet to help increase the fiber content. I usually recommend Science Diet, Royal Canin, Natural Balance or Purina One for diets. I suspect food allergy or IBD. I recommend you try the following: 1. Change the diet to Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. I have had a lot of luck with clients using this diet and it has really helped. Change the diet slowly over a week's time to prevent further GI upset. I would inform the owners and ask them their wishes. If they are going to be gone for an extended period, I would feel better if the cat could be seen by a vet before then, since the condition seems to be not improving. They may need to call their vet to authorize you to take the cat in on their behalf. Since you are the sitter, I could see him maybe peeing outside the box in protest to someone else taking care of them, but, unless the cat is extremely sensitive to stress, I wouldn't think a petsitter would be enough to make him have intestinal upset. He could have parasites, a bacterial infection or has eaten something that disagreed with him, among other possibilities. If they will be home in the next day or so they may want to get him seen themselves and as long as he continues to eat and drink and behave normally, that should be okay.

If Daisy is otherwise well, I would be concerned the most likely cause is a gastrointestinal parasite. The blood you are seeing in the stools may be stress colitis. I suggest you do the following: 1. This is a long time for a cat to have diarrhea and the signs of blood and weight-loss indicate that he likely has a disease of the intestines like inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, or dietary intolerance/allergy. Considering that he is very skinny, the best thing you can do is take him to the vet for an evaluation. The vet will be able to help narrow-down the cause of this and prescribe the necessary medication to keep him from losing any further body condition. Without knowing the specific cause of this, it's unfortunately not possible to know what will make him look and feel normal again.
