My older cat is having incontinence after spay surgery. Is it common?

I find that very young dogs that are spayed can get incontience. However it is not typical in older dogs no matter the method they are spayed. I would make sure a urine sample is checked for infection and crystals. If this is normal than it is possible she has developed incontience due to being spayed. Typically estrogen supplements helps the most prevent dribbling. Hope that helps

There is a chance that there was some trauma to the bladder area while removing the uterus which is located just above the cervix. Some light bleeding can be expected to occur for 1-3 days after surgery but copious amounts of blood or prolonged bleeding should be considered abnormal. I would recommend either taking your cat back to the previous veterinarian, since he/she did the surgery, for a follow-up visit for further care. Or if the trust has been broken with this vet, you can get kitty seen with another expert for an exam and potential urinalysis to ensure there isn't a UTI present that could explain the symptoms that mentioned. As long as there is an active flow of urine and no outward signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, bloated abdomen) then this sounds like a relatively non-emergency type situation that can be hopefully be resolved with medical treatment, if any.

This can happen but usually only for less than 24 hours. If it's been more than 24 hours and she is still suffering from uncontrollable diarrhea, you should contact your vet straight away.

Some females will develop incontinence after the spay. This does make them more prone to urinary tract infections and I do recommend to have Amber visit her veterinarian. The doctor will check her for a bladder infection and if that is clear they will discuss starting her on a medication to tighten the sphincter. This will likely stop the incontinence. Hello. I am so sorry that no one has addressed your question sooner. It is difficult to predict how the accidental tear in Belladonna's urinary bladder will affect her in the future. Most bladder tears, or cuts from incisions, heal very well, & very quickly, so I really do not expect there to be long term problems. However, I am a little alarmed that your veterinarian did not disclose that the urinary bladder was nicked during her spay surgery. That sends up a bit of a red flag about their ethics. As long as Belladonna is urinating, I would not be as concerned about the volume as most likely she is adequately emptying her bladder. Thank you so much for using Pet Coach to address your questions about Princess. I would not expect the constipation 2 weeks after a spay but sometimes urinary tract infections can occur after the surgery. Tonight try feeding Princess some canned food with a teaspoon of canned pumpkin, make sure to add extra water. Tomorrow take Princess into the vet to have her urine checked for infection. Sometimes there's not really constipation, its more straining due to the bladder being inflamed. The doctor may be able to tell if theres constipation based upon abdominal palpation. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. A urine sample will likely be collected and evaluated under the microscope. If an infection is suspected, a urine culture may be recommended.
