Why is my older cat collapsing or staring blankly sometimes?

This very concerning. Your kitty could have had an epileptic seizure or a so-called syncope. Syncopes are caused by the brain not getting enough oxygenized blood, which in turn causes the cat to get unconscious, or a seizure like episode. These syncopes are often caused by heart disease or, in a case of a young animal, it could be a sign of a congenital defect. I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam, and do mention this episode to your vet. You may want to write down the particulars, so your vet gets as accurate a description as possible from you. This said, it also may have just been a one-time occurrence, with unknown cause.

Hello and thank you very much for your inquiry. Right off the bat, I began to think of your cat as having mild seizure activity where he loses consciousness and thus control of his bowels. There are also some diseases that cats can get which causes irregular heartbeats or irregular blood flow to the rest of the body which temporarily knocks them unconscious and then they lose control of their bowels also. You need to take your cat to a veterinarian to have a complete cardiac and neurologic work up performed. That sounds scary! Henry needs to be examined by his veterinarian within the next 24 hours. Symptoms like this can be a few things but syncope and seizures are most common. Syncope is a sign of a bad heart. Pets can have seizures for many reasons including liver disease, idiopathic, electrolyte imbalance, infections, inner ear problems, cancer or epilepsy. He will need a physical exam and bloodwork to begin to narrow down and appropriately address the cause. Seizures are serious and are best addressed early. Hi, has Carols heart been checked over ? If so and everything appears to be well, it could be that Carlos is suffering with a neurological episode, a partial seizure.A neurological exam and advanced imaging such an MRI or CT scan will be able together with more specific blood tests and spinal tap, to give more detailed information. However since he has random episodes and he other ways may be normal, I would recommend to film him once he has an episode so that his vet can have a look at it and see exactly what is happening. It may not be his time yet but he does need to be examined by the veterinarian today. The disorientation and potential blindness is concerning for low blood sugar, hypertension, a brain tumor and a few other conditions. Some of these conditions respond very well to treatment and some don't but first, you must know what is happening so you know the treatment options. He may be having vision problems, high blood pressure or might have had a seizure. If his pupils are wide open, please take him to an out of hours or emergency veterinarian now. He may have high blood pressure and fast intervention can reverse any blindness caused by this. If his pupils are normal and react normally, take him to a vet tomorrow for an exam.

You should take Cheshire to your local vets for full clinical examination and a blood test to check his blood sugar level, red cell count, kidney and liver function. If the blood results come back normal and he keeps having the episodes, he may need further investigation, like MRI scan of the brain. Alternatively, your vet may recommend treatment with anti-epileptic medication asa trial.
