Why is my old, usually aloof cat suddenly so clingy and needy?

A sudden change in behavior, such as being more clingy, can be a sign of illness in cats. I'd have Sylvester checked out by a vet this week just to make sure everything is ok with him. If he is healthy, it may just be he's feeling rather cuddly, and wants a lot of love and attention from your husband. Cats can be fickle, and he may decide to get attention from you as well eventually.

As with any sudden behavioral change, an exam to rule out any health issues is always the best first option. If the weather is changing rapidly and you are seeing her seek out warmer spots such as blankets, by heater vents, etc that could also be related to the behavior. Adding a warm blanket out of the dryer to her bed, or providing a place for her to sleep near a heater may help. However, if you are concerned enough about the change, a vet exam for a bit of peace of mind is always good.

Certainly personalities can change as cats get older, but i would recommend making sure there isn't a medical explanation for her behavior. We see conditions like hyperthyroidism (a high thyroid level) which can cause increased activity as one of its first signs. Given that you say this is extremely out of character for Fluffy, I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow for a health check.
