Why is my cat suddenly clingy, following me, and meowing?

Certainly personalities can change as cats get older, but i would recommend making sure there isn't a medical explanation for her behavior. We see conditions like hyperthyroidism (a high thyroid level) which can cause increased activity as one of its first signs. As with any sudden behavioral change, an exam to rule out any health issues is always the best first option. If the weather is changing rapidly and you are seeing her seek out warmer spots such as blankets, by heater vents, etc that could also be related to the behavior. Adding a warm blanket out of the dryer to her bed, or providing a place for her to sleep near a heater may help. However, if you are concerned enough about the change, a vet exam for a bit of peace of mind is always good.

If she seems like she is losing weight, it may be worth taking her to the vet to check for a medical problem. If she is not losing weight, then I would just check for anything that she may be missing in her environment, and keep an eye on her for a few more days. A sudden change in behavior, such as being more clingy, can be a sign of illness in cats. I'd have Sylvester checked out by a vet this week just to make sure everything is ok with him. If he is healthy, it may just be he's feeling rather cuddly, and wants a lot of love and attention from your husband. Cats can be fickle, and he may decide to get attention from you as well eventually.

Hyperthyroidism can cause everything you're describing and is treatable. Another medical explanation could be pain. A hurt back, etc. can make even the nicest cat an absolute nightmare. Finally, though I hate to say it, brain tumors, adrenal gland tumors, and dementia are also possible (though usually they do not come on so quickly).
