What non-prescription meds can I give an uncatchable sick feral cat?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | 6 lbs

A feral cat that I feed has what appears to be an acute infection in his left eye and mouth area . His eye is crusting shut and he is having difficulty closing his mouth and is drooling a bit. No Vets here will provide antibiotics for a stray, and I have been unsuccessful in capturing him. He will not enter a humane trap under any circumstances. He is very ill and I am fearful he will die. Is there any non prescription medication I can give him?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfortunately, there are no oral medications (prescription or non) that will help him. The eye probably needs topical medications so you will have to catch him to even try. I would recommend offering him canned cat food so he can eat without much discomfort. If he eats the canned food, maybe you can use it to lure him into the trap. Good luck!

    Unfortunately there is very little to do without being able to catch him. A lot of feral cats have viruses in their systems which flare up again and again. A few of these effect the eyes and can cause permanent damage.
    All you can do is attempt to catch him in the trap as he will likely need to be sedated to be examined and treated. If you are struggling with the trapping you could contact a local shelter to see if they can offer any assistance. You can only do your best and I understand that you are so concerned about him, but it's not your fault that he is so difficult to catch.

You can try and see if having the medication compounded at a compounding pharmacy to a very small dose and with good flavoring that can be disguised well enough for Wendy to take. Otherwise, you will need to consider having her kept at a veterinary clinic as medical boarding and have the veterinary staff try and medicate her for you. I hope this helps! Can I give antibiotics to a feral cat with breathing issues at home?
Hello, There is nothing over the counter I would recommend giving to a feral animal. A lot of respiratory disease in cats is viral based, but even with secondary infections, dosing the antibiotics correctly in an outdoor cat is very difficult and would likely result in antibiotic resistance and a worse infection. There are long acting injectable antibiotics, but Oreo would need to be able to be trapped or handled to be assessed by a vet for the need for antibiotics and to receive the injection. Yes, your suspicion is right, Antibiotics are likely to be needed. Unfortunately without prescription it is going to be difficult to obtain any antibiotic and we are not allowed to make any prescription through this platform. Feral cat has eye/nose discharge. Can I buy meds online without a vet?
Unfortunately, you would need confirmation of the infection from a vet, as well as a prescription from them for the antibiotic. Both respiratory and viral infections can cause problems like this. If she can't be transported to the vet, you may see if you can humanely trap her and have the vet sedate her for care while there, or if there is a local animal control/society that can help catch her to provide care.

My feral cat needs eye drops. How do I give them if she avoids me?
That is a tough situation since you can't treat a pet unless you can catch them. You may try trapping her somehow and keeping her contained until the treatment is ended. Adding Lysine (a supplement for cats) may also help but will not be as effective as the eye drops. Best of luck.
