Is it normal for 5-day-old kittens to pant when it's not hot?

Hello, if you think they are too warm they may be panting because they are feeling hot. If they are nursing and still have not opened their eyes, they may be thinking that you are going to feed them and thus initiating a suckle reflex. If they are still nursing, ensure the Queen is producing milk and that the kittens are able to nurse appropriately every 2-3 hours. If bottle feeding them, then ensure they are getting fed at similar time intervals. Best of luck and hope this helps.

Your kitten will need to have an exam by your veterinarian. She could be suffering from a congenital malformation of the blood vessels near the heart or have a hole in the septum of the heart. This would often not show when the kitten is resting, but when it exercises, runs and plays there is not enough oxygen being pumped to the lungs and muscles because oxygenated and used up blood mixes. Problems often do not occur until 3-4 months of age. Please make an appointment with your vet for an exam.

Hailee is a cute name. I would be concerned any time a cat is panting. A increased respiratory effort can be secondary to infection, virus, congenital issue or even pain related. I would recommend taking Hailee to a vet to make sure nothing serious is going on.

Make sure Twitch is eating and drinking normally, has a normal vagina discharge, and has a normal temperature (between 101-102.5F). As long as his breathing rate is able to slow to a more normal rate, like 30-50 breaths per minute, and he is otherwise acting normally (eating/drinking well with a good energy level), he will likely be just fine! No, panting in cats is never normal. I see that Tammy is quite young, but issues like asthma, heart failure, or toxin exposure could all cause signs of respiratory distress. On occasion, significant stress can trigger panting in some cats, but oftentimes there's also an underlying disease process. I strongly recommend taking Tammy to your vet or an emergency vet right away for evaluation.
