Why is my new kitten scared and hiding? How do I help her adjust?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

Hello, my father brought me a kitten which was given by his friend—it seems like the kitten is very scared about its surroundings. I'm not really sure how to explain it—she does not seem feral (since she approaches me at times and doesn't hisses/attacks when I try touch her) but she always runs off and hides away whenever I come close and she flinches when I try touch her. What is the problem and is there a way to train her to be used to me or her surroundings?

Moving into a new home is often frightening for a kitten, and it will take time for Amber to get used to her new home and you. I would give her lots of love and attention when she approaches you, including treats. This shows her that coming up to you is a good thing. Give her treats when she allows you to touch her. I would not try to approach her yourself, allow her to come to you. As she becomes adjusted to her home, she will eventually allow you to approach her.
