My new cat is stressed and won't eat, drink, or use the litter. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

I brought in a cat from a friend who needed someone to watch them for a couple months while they travel. The cat has been here 24 hours and is very stressed. They have not eaten and have not drank anything. They also have not gone to the bathroom. What should I do?

Change in environment can be very stressful for animals so I am not surprised that he is having some problems adjusting. You could try a Feliway diffuser and some Solliquin chews and see if that helps.

She may be stressed from the change in environment. Give her a few days to adjust. You could get a Feliway diffuser to help with the adjustment. If she seems lethargic or stops eating, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause.
