Is it okay for my new cat to play with toys from my previous cat?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cats are finicky creatures. Cats tend to only like the cats they know. Even though your cat seems to like the ones she lives with doesn't mean she will like a new cat. Cats are territorial and like their own personal space. I would first allow your cat to get used to your new house with your boyfriend. See how is goes over several months. She will be stressed for a while just because of the move. Then see how she is once she is settled. If you want to get another cat for company consider it in a few months. Good luck!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If you still have any of the previous cat's food, you can try gradually introducing the new food. For example, start by feeding 25% new food and 75% old food for a few days. Then 50%/50% for a few days. Then feed 75% new food and 25% old food for a few days. Then feed just 100% of the new food. This will help to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset as a result of a diet change. If you do not have any more of the previous diet, that is OK. Just be aware that your cat may have some soft stools for several days during the initial diet change. I hope this is helpful!

Sometimes dog just like their old worn out toys, just like with kids. If he doesn't want to play with the new one and only wants the old one then let him play with the one he likes. Congratulations on your new cat! It is absolutely normal for her to be getting used to her environment. I recommend introducing toys slowly, and letting her play on her own time, especially if you do not know what her lifestyle was like prior to living with you. With the kitten to keep him amused, the toys may not be as exciting as they once were, after all, you got him a living, breathing toy to play with. Leave the toys available, make sure they both have perches and cat trees and places to scratch and look out the windows, but don't worry too much if it's a while before he plays with them. You may try a different kind of toy than what he has, maybe a wand toy with feathers so you can play with him, or some foam or mylar balls that crinkle and he can carry around, just to see if you can entice him to play with you again.

I would encourage you to introduce them slowly and supervise them at all times at least for the first week to make sure they are getting along. I recommend you consider using a product called Feliway which may help tremendously in calming them in stressful situations like this could be. You may find that online or at your local pet store.
