Is it too soon to get a new cat for my male cat? Male or female?

I'm so sorry for your loss. In general, cats tend to get along better with members of the opposite sex so you may want to consider adopting a male. Kittens can be quite annoying to older cats, but with an older cat it may be difficult to determine what their personality is like prior to adoption and older cats are not quite as adaptable as kittens are. If there is a rescue group or shelter in your area you may want to ask about young adult cats with easygoing personalities - there may even be a rescue that would allow you to take a cat home for a trial period. If you do end up adopting a new cat be sure to introduce them to each other very slowly, make sure they have separate resources at first (food, water, resting areas and litter pans) and consider a pheromone spray like Feliway to reduce stress.

It's kind of you to think about getting Josie a kitty friend for company, since you'll be starting work soon - I'm sure she would appreciate it, if you can find her a good match :) You're right that it can sometimes be difficult to successfully introduce adult cats to each other, so a kitten may be easier. And generally speaking, male/female pairs tend to do better - so I think a male kitten is a great option. To help make the introduction go as smoothly as possible, I would recommend setting up a separate room for the kitten when you first bring him home - he should have his own food and water bowls, litter box, toys, and a scratching post or cat tree. Keep him in this room with the door closed for the first week or two, so that Josie can get used to smelling him and hearing him through the door. You can also help her to associate good things with the kitten by feeding her treats outside his door a few times a day. Once she is no longer reacting at all when she hears him or smells him under the door, you can start to leave the door open for short periods so that he can venture out into the house. This way, Josie will already be used to his presence before they actually meet face to face. Feliway pheromone diffusers placed around the house can also help to reduce Josie's stress and encourage more social behavior during the adjustment period.

Wow, how terrible for you to lose both your cats so close together. I am so sorry for your loss! It could be that Midnight is missing her companions. You can get another cat, but I would only get one if you are ready for that. Give her lots of love and attention, and when you are ready to add another cat to your home, I would do that. I'm very sorry that you lost your boy recently! Yes, they can get along despite the age difference and genders, but I would introduce them slowly to Abby to prevent problems. Take the new cats, and put them in their own room with their own food, water, and litter box. Keep the door closed, and for a few days, feed them all treats on other side of door so they associate each other's smell with a good experience. Then let Abby in the new cat's room while the new cats are in their own cat carriers. They can smell each other, but not be in contact. If anyone becomes upset or show signs of aggression, remove Abby from the room, and try again later. Praise them when they interact appropriately. When they are interacting well with each other through the carrier, you can let the new cats out of their room, and see how they interacts with Abby. I would get a cat tree with lots of shelves to give the cats vertical space to get away from each other. I would keep the new cats in their room when you go out until they are comfortable with each other.

Hello. It is very difficult to say how Esther may react to a new kitten, but she may be distressed by the loss of her companion. I think it would be a good idea to adopt a new kitten, but do take plenty of time to introduce them. Only time will tell if this will soothe her distress. You might also consider having Esther examined as any stressful event in a cat's life can bring on underlying conditions or illnesses. I am sorry to hear about your cat passing away. It is very normal for pets in the same household to grieve the loss of a sibling/house mate. What Tommy is going through is completely normal. I would first recommend taking her to be checked out by your vet just to ensure there is no underlying illness that is causing her change in behavior. If she receives a clean bill of health then you can assume her behavior is due to the loss of her sister. It is hard to say whether or not getting another cat would help. She may love the company of another female or she may feel stressed at having a new housemate. In the meantime, while you are deciding on whether or not to add another cat to your home, try spending some extra time and giving extra attention to Tommy, this may be all she needs.
