My neutered cat attacks people. What causes this sudden aggression?

Neutering him would hopefully lessen his aggressive behavior. Another choice would be taking him to your vet and letting your vet screen him for a medical problem which could lead to abnormal behavior. Your vet can run tests (blood, urine, x-rays) to rule out medical disease. If a medical problem is ruled out, neutering and drug therapy could be used to try to lessen the aggression. Cat bites/scratches are very serious and this is a serious problem. Someone can get injured quite severely especially if they are immune compromised or have diabetes and suffer a cat bite. Another concern is rabies. Rabies causes aggression in animals along with other forms of nervous system diseases. It's important to get him evaluated as soon as possible. Good luck with Snoopy.

That is very unusual and sounds scary! There could be a few reasons for this behavior. Sometimes there could be pain or a medical condition causing a change in behavior. Since Oscar can't talk and tell you what is happening, I recommend to have him examined by the veterinarian to be safe. Sometimes this behavior is related to the stress of seeing another cat outside. For some cats, this causes frustration and they can then exhibit bullying type behavior to other pets or people within the house. If the veterinarian thinks this is behavioral, there are a few things you can do. Try enriching the environment. If he is the only cat in the household, you may try feeding him out of a food puzzle. Hide food for him to find. Do not use these last two mentioned options if you have other cats. Provide a stand or resting place by a window so he can look outside. You may also try clicker training him for positive behavior. Try to drive out the cat if possible. You may also need to block the window where you think Oscar may be viewing the cat most frequently. Most cats response best to combination therapy. A sudden change in behavior may have, at its root, injury or infection. Ideally, Rostom should be physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose and treat any medical causes for his sudden aggression. Neutering him should be strongly considered as testosterone can be a driving force behind aggressive behaviors. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can address behavioral concerns such as stress or anxiety. A pheromone product, such as Feliway Spray or plug in diffusers, may help decrease any aggression or anxiety. A gradual desensitization to loud noises can also be done to lessen Rostom's response to them.

That is unusual behavior so he may be irritable from being in pain. Outdoor unneutered male cats often fight and he may have an injury you can’t see which is painful. I recommend confining him to another room until he calms down so no one else gets injured, and see if he is eating normally. If this behavior continues please take him in for an exam to check for a wound or area of pain. In addition I would consider neutering him also. It may be a hormonal problem so the first thing you should do is have him neutered. Your cat may also be redirected his aggression on to you. Redirected aggression occurs when a cat experiences something that is over-stimulating or highly arousing or something that causes fear and the cat redirects their frustration, aggression onto whoever is closest. Sometimes it can be another cat or animal outside that is causing the problem. You could also try a Feliway diffuser/spray and/or Soliquin chews and see if that helps.

I'm sorry to hear this! I know how frustrating behavioral issues can be! This sounds like Tatty is behaving this way out of stress. Stress can result from a underlying medical issue among other things. Inappropriate elimination (peeing or pooping outside the litter box) in cats can be frustrating and difficult to treat. The first step you should take is scheduling an appointment for your cat to see a veterinarian. A lot of times a cat will start going outside of the litter box due to health problems like urinating tract infections, pain, urinary tract inflammation and digestive problems. Once you have established that there aren't any medical reasons for inappropriate elimination the following may be helpful: 1. Cats will urinate or defecate outside of the litter box for stress related reasons. Therefore it is best to keep the litter boxes in several different, quiet areas of the household. This may also help reduce Tatty's stress level. 2. A pheromone diffuser like Feliway can be quite helpful. This can be very useful when a cat is showing agression like Tatty. 3. Ensure you have at least one litter box in the household per cat plus one. For example, if you have 3 cats, then 4 litter boxes are recommended. 4. Feeding an all canned food diet can help if there is inflammation in the bladder. There are also prescription diets available to help with bladder inflammation or digestive issues. Your veterinarian can help you choose the best one for your cat. 5. The litter boxes should be cleaned once to twice daily and completely emptied and washed weekly. Most cats prefer litter to be the clumping type that is kept a few inches deep. Certain litter types like Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter may be helpful. 6. If you are still having problems after taking the above steps you may want to talk to your veterinarian about behavioral medication.
