Why is my male cat's penis exposed during grooming? Is it normal?

When they groom around their penis it can become erect. It may also be time to get him neutered. If he is excessively grooming down there he should see a Vet and have his urine tested. This can be completely normal, especially in pets that are intact. Intact males have high levels of testosterone that causes an erection during times of excitation. I wouldn't be too concerned unless it remains out afterwards and doesn't go back in, or your cat starts vocalizing and is seen straining to urinate (signs of a urinary blockage). You can still opt to get him checked out by your vet just to make sure he is physically ok; however he is likely just fine.

Yes, this can be normal. It could be Draco may have been doing this before, but you simply didn't notice, and now that you are paying closer attention to him due the fact he was neutered, you seeing this behavior. As long as everything else is normal, he's going to the litter box normally, this isn't an issue. It would be an issue if he was crying when he tried to pee, you saw blood in his urine, he was attempting to pee but could not, was going to the litter box multiple times in a short period of time, was peeing in small amounts frequently, and/or was very lethargic. If you see any of those signs, then it's an emergency and he would need to see a vet immediately. At this point in time, I do think what you are seeing is normal behavior, however. I can understand being concerned about Buddy. If he was blocked, he would be going to the litter box multiple times, would be straining to urinate, would be yowling in pain when he tries to urinate, and would pass only small amounts of urine or no urine at all. If you see any of those signs, rush him into a vet immediately. It could be he is suffering from feline idiopathic cystitis or bladder stones causing him to lick his penis. Have him seen by a vet in the morning as long as he doesn't show any of the signs I mentioned above (those symptoms requires an emergency visit(. I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear about Tiger. A photo of the area may help us to better determine what could be going on with him. There are several different possibilities, including a prolapse urethra (especially if the tip of the penis looks round or enlarged), cystitis, stones in the bladder or urethra, a mass/tumor in the bladder, or a bad bladder infection. I would recommend getting him in to see a vet today. If you think he is unable to urinate or he seems lethargic/is vomiting then it would be considered an emergency as he could have a urethral obstruction/blockage and this can be deadly if untreated. The vet will examine him and may test his urine and recommend an x-ray to determine the source of his problem.

I suggest you have him to your vet for an exam and urine test. It is not normal for male cats to lick their privates incessantly. Male cats often form crystals in their urine and they can be irritating to the urethra as they pass through which may be causing the licking. As long as he is passing some urine it is not an emergency but you should try to get him examined in the next day or so.
