Neutering my male cat: Will he still mate? What changes & is it safe?

Hello i wanted to ask i have a 1 and half year old male cat if i spay him will he still have sex ??and what will change when he will be spayed?? And is it safe or not?

Thank you for your questions about Casper. Having him castrated (spaying is term for female animal but I know what you mean), is generally considered a safe and routine procedure although any procedure carries risks. Castrating a male cat will decrease the tendency to roam, fight and spray his urine. By decreasing these behaviors, there is a decrease in these castrated cats to get abscesses, Feline Leukemia viral infections, Feline Immunodeficiency viral infections and they are less likely to be hit by cars or attacked by other animals as they are staying closer to home. The males typically stop spraying which most pet owners appreciate. Most males will also stop having sex but some may still exhibit the behavior. I recommend to speak with your veterinarian about risks with the procedure. I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to post any additional questions!

It's likely that getting him neutered would help - "spraying" or urinating on objects in the house and wanting to roam outside are both very normal behaviors for intact males, so this is definitely the first thing I would suggest. These two things are the main reasons that almost all indoor male cats in the US are neutered :) Since he's almost two years old, there is a chance that neutering may not resolve these issues completely - behaviors like this can become a learned habit if they go on for long enough, so I would recommend having the neuter done as soon as possible.

Although it is possible that having Meeser neutered will not completely eradicate this behavior I still think it is worth going forward with the surgery. It is a very brief surgical procedure in cats and they usually recover very quickly. It may take awhile before the testosterone is completely gone, but there may be an improvement in the spraying behavior. I would actually recommend having both cats neutered if you are not planning to breed them as the other cat could start with this behavior at any time.

Will neutering my male cat change his loving, lap cat personality?

If this is a male cat getting neutered (not sure if that is what you mean, or if in the UK they call both procedures being spayed) then it should not cause him to be any less loving. In most cases it will help calm and settle a male cat who otherwise as he matures would be more likely to want to roam or be aggressive.

Can neutering an older cat stop roaming, fighting, and marking?

Neutering will keep him from roaming as much although if he continues to go outside he may still fight with other cats. The urine marking in the house may stop but there is no guarantee as he is already older. If they are neutered young (like less than 6 months of age) then that behaviour is virtually non-existent. So, to answer your question......maybe some of the bad behaviours will stop but there is no guarantee. Regardless, it is better to have him neutered and I highly recommend it.

Will neutering my aggressive male cat stop him attacking my other cat?

Neutering male cats is one of the most effective ways of limiting inter-cat aggression. There are no guarantees, but castration is definitely the first and best thing worth trying. If you are worried about the two cats hurting one another, I would keep them separated for the time being. Even after the castration there will still be some residual hormones left in the body for a short while. I would consider keeping the two separated for at least a week or two post-operatively before reintroduction. Hope this makes sense.

Should I neuter my older indoor male cat if he has no issues?

How lovely of you to bring him Cactus! Even though he's not showing behavioral signs now, it doesn't mean that he won't start spraying to mark his territory and want to go outside to roam. Also intact male cats tend to be poor groomers, causing them to become matted and scruffy-looking. On the other hand, neutered male cats tend to pay more attention to themselves and keep themselves clean. I think having him neutered would be a good idea. Best of luck.

Is it risky to neuter my male cat? Any potential side effects?

A trained vet doctor performing a cat neuter is very safe. Cats are actually much safer than dogs to neuter. In order to make sure Vanilla doesn't feel the surgery, he will be given anesthesia. Anesthesia always has some level of risk, but again, in the hands of a trained vet doctor, the anesthesia is very safe. I hope that helps and I hope all is well with Vanilla.
