My sick, lethargic kitten won't eat after URI. What can I do?

Kitten was a rescue from a foster who starved the kitten and was fired. The kitten is less than 11 weeks old and is refusing to eat and drink feeding by formula by seringe cat is taking cloramax for a upper respiratory infection and is not improving. The vet that the kitten was taken to said that the cat most likely would not survive that was when it was not even drinking fluid. Kitten started to drink but still refusing food and very lathargic. Any help would be amazing.

Poor kitten! I suspect the kitten is very sick and that’s why it is not eating or drinking. Although it may not work, giving subcutaneous fluids every day and force feeding may be needed until the kitten feels better. Feed a diet such as a/d or r/s as they are high calorie. You also have more aggressive options such as hospitalization with intravenous fluids or even a feeding tube placement. Sometimes these kittens need a lot of intense care and time to feel better. Make sure it stays warm and visits the veterinarian as needed. The vet may be able to show you how to give subcutaneous fluids if needed.

He is not urinating much then he should be seen. A decreased appetite can go along with pain and I would worry about an infection or kidney disease given his symptoms along with a urinary obstruction. he is very young for this though.
A kitten his age should be active and have a good appetite since he is growing still. They may need to do blood work also to see if this is something un related and he is not urinating much simply because he is conserving what he has to aid in hydration.
You can try tuna or boiled chicken with some of the juice to help encourage him to eat and drink more until you can get him seen.

Hi, it sounds like he might benefit to be seen as an emergency ASAP. It could be that he has not been able to pass urine and he is now in pain and starting to suffer possible life threatening consequences. Could you have him checked over ?

Poor Kyle. I recommend to call his veterinarian and tell them what is going on. They may add on medication to soothe his stomach, an appetite stimulant or they may ask to examine him again to check for/treat and ongoing fever. Since he is not wanting to eat on his own, he needs medication to help him recover. I hope this helps and that he starts feeling better quickly.

Hello, sorry to hear about Otto. He may not be eating because he does not feel well. He has an upper respiratory infection and likely feels very congested, he also now developed diarrhea and vomiting. So over all he likely feels very sick. He needs to continue his medications and be given time to get over his illness, unless his signs are getting worse. What you may talk to your veterinarian tomorrow about is starting Otto on an appetite stimulant to get him to start eating sooner. The sooner he eats, the better he will likely feel. Additionally, if he is not getting better you may need to consider other diagnostics including an abdominal ultrasound. Hope Otto feels better soon.

My 2-month-old kitten is dehydrated, won't eat, has flu. What to do?

Poor little one, I would recommend that he has fluids intravenously and medications through the drip until he starts to eat.. then you can start oral medications. If he is dehydrated already, as time goes by without eating, he will be getting worse. Hope you can have him rechecked and that something a little more intensive can be done for him. My cat has URI, no improvement after shot. Why won't he eat or drink?

Poor Sourpatch! You typically should start to see some improvement within 24-48 hours, but it can be longer based on the severity of the infection. He likely isn't using the litter box because he hasn't eaten or drank, so he has no need to pass anything. When cats have a respiratory infection, they can't smell their food. Smell is very important to cats, and they won't eat something if they can't smell it. To tempt him to eat, I would gently warm up really smelly wet food, such as sardine or fished based. That will get some moisture in him as well, and hopefully he will start eating soon. If he still isn't eating after trying this in another 24 hours, I would take him back into the vet.

My kitten is sick, vomiting, and won't eat. What should I do?

I would recommend that you take Arfa to your vet for a physical examination and possibly diagnostic testing, such as bloodwork, parvo testing, or x-rays. The symptoms you describe are a little vague, but could be caused by bacterial infection, viral infection (such as panleukopenia virus), intestinal parasites, intestinal obstruction, among many others. At this point, offer Arfa many different types of dry and wet cat food and even kitten milk replacer to see if you can entice her to eat. You can also syringe her water or pedialyte to try to maintain hydration, however this can worsen nausea. Many times kittens that aren't interested in eating need IV fluids to stay hydrated. Periset is an anti-nausea medication. Mega CV is an antibiotic. Polybion is a vitamin supplement.

My cat has a URI and won't eat after starting medication. What to do?

An upper respiratory infection often involves nasal discharge or swelling of the mucous membranes which can then disable the sense of smell and then cats do not want to eat. One way of helping that is to 1) remove any discharge from the nose as often as possible with a moist tissue. 2) feed her fishy canned food, preferably pate style, and warm it up in the microwave. This will intensify the aroma of the food. Clavamox tastes not so good, and sometimes it can also make a cat not hungry. However, it is absolutely necessary that your kitty eats at least a little bit every day in order not to get a serious liver disease. Try to hand feed her, if she will not eat from the bowl. If she does not eat at all she will need to be seen by your vet for a recheck.

My kitten is lethargic, congested, and won't eat. What's wrong?

I am so sorry to hear that the kitten is so sick. Most URIs in kittens are viral, however it is common to treat with antibiotics to help prevent secondary bacterial infections. Pneumonia is certainly possible but typically they are coughing with pneumonia. I would also be suspicious of a nasopharyngeal polyp that typically could be adding to the congestion, but doesn’t usually cause lethargy. I am glad you are going back to the veterinarian. Perhaps they can prescribe a nebulizer to help her more than steam. Also you may want to discuss using saline drops to help loosen the congestion. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.
