My huge cat needs a bigger litter box. What are my best options?

It is best to try a long tupperware like the under-the-bed sweater box ( see the one linked below) for a litter box. All the studies done show that cats prefer to have a litter box that is 1-1/2 times their length. See if this helps. I would also recommend using some Feliway diffusers especially in the room that contains the litter box (es). You can purchase a large storage container such as a Sterilite. Then use the lid as a litterbox. This provides a large surface area with a very low lip. It will be messy if she digs and buries, but I have had many geriatric patients prefer this to a normal litterbox. I hope this information helps!

Hi there. Any kind of container (such as a shallow cardboard box, plastic storage container, etc.) with litter in it will do. If you aren't able to purchase cat litter, you could try using potting soil, sand, or fill dirt.

I would try a large litter box. Some cats, especially males, need a large space in order to not accidently drip on the outside of the box. You may also try the option of a covered box. Some cats don't like those so I would still leave out the uncovered boxes. You could also get some of the urinary pads like puppy pads or geriatric human bed pads to put under the pans to make clean up easier. Finally, I would make sure you have enough boxes in general. The typical rule of thumb is a litterbox per cat plus one extra. I know with 6 cats, that can be a lot so however many you can put throughout your house, the better. I hope this helps!

I would consider purchasing a large litterbox to allow her easy access. I would also recommend removing the cover if it is a hooded litterbox to allow her more room to turn around. You can put it on a table that is big enough to leave some walking space in front of the box. Make sure the box is fixated on the table in such a way, that it does not move (you can put velcro on the table and the box). Put the table and box against a wall. Show your kitty where the box is. She should be able and willing to jump up and use it. The other possibility is to have the box in kind of a lift (sits in a basket that has a rope affixed and you can pull it up via a pulley. I love that you have already switched to the unscented litter as that can be a big problem for many cats. Putting the litter box in the shower is a great idea. I would also make sure to clean up the spots he went outside the litterbox using an enzymatic pet stain cleaner to ensure he does not keep smelling urine/feces there and think that it is akin to a litterbox.
