Why are my kitten's URI symptoms getting worse even on Clavamox?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 2 months and 5 days old | 2 lbs

My two month kitten was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection as well as coccidia. He is on two different medications, and we have notice that his symptoms with the upper respiratory infection have worsened. Is it typical for the symptoms to get worse before they get better even when he is on Clavamox?

Hello, sorry to hear about Gimli. It is really dependent on what kind of infection you kitten has. Most upper respiratory infections are viral which antibiotics cannot treat. Therefor, you must await for the virus lifecycle to end. You may talk to your vet about using lysine gel or topical anti-virals to help shorten the virus life cycle. Hope this helps.
