Is my 6-month-old kitten too thin? How can I help him gain weight?

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Voldy is around 3lbs which is not completely out of the ordinary for a 4 month kitten. From the pictures alone, he appears well muscled and does not appear to be underweight (although a physical exam would be better at determining this). Kittens should weigh about 5 pounds at 6 months old, so I would continue feeding him a kitten food from Royal Canin and make sure he gets a kitten vitamin daily to encourage healthy growth. If you notice Voldy is not gaining any more weight or is eating less, you may want to have him seen by his veterinarian for exam just to make sure there are no underlying medical issues. Hello. As long as Sock is eating a good quality, name brand kitten food, then he will develop normally. He is a teenager now, & he will stay lean probably for the first year or so of his life. As he transitions into maturity, he will naturally begin to gain additional weight. Watch this, because Maine Coons do have a tendency toward obesity. So keep him on a kitten formula for the first 12-15 months, then transition him to an adult maintenance food. Take care.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would deworm him. Intestinal parasites are almost always present in young animals as they are passed from the milk. He could be getting more lean but this could also be an early warning sign that something is going on. I would collect a stool sample and have him seen for his first vet visit. The Vet can do an exam, test his stool, feline leukemia and FIV test him and consider giving his first vaccination. I wish you and Noah the very best!

Roxy is so cute! Given that her eyes are open, she is definitely at least three weeks old, but based on the picture, I would say she is older than that. She may be skinny from intestinal worms, which is common in kittens. It's a good idea to have her seen by a vet on Monday, who can give her a deworming treatment, give you a more exact age, and do a health check on her. Just in case she isn't used to dry kitten food, I will give you a method to help her get used to it. Also be sure to leave water out at all times for her. I would soak a high quality kitten formulated dry food in warm water until soft. Then mix that with kitten formula such as KMR to make a mush the consistency of oatmeal. Over the next two weeks, gradually increase the amount of dry kitten food and decrease the amount of water and KMR you use until she is eating the dry kitten food only. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Cats and dogs can vary in size based on genetics. If Kenny is small but otherwise healthy he is likely normal. If he is skinny then I would be sure he has been properly dewormed. It would be best to have his stool tested. If he is older then a physical exam and blood work may be warranted. You are feeding correctly, and grazing on food all day is normal and a good way to eat for a cat. I would have dry food out all of the time, and I would check the calorie content of the dry foods at the store and get Zoii the one higher in calories. You may also consider feeding some canned food daily. Some animals prefer to be on the thin side and they self regulate how much they eat so they stay thin and fit. In my experience once the cats mature and get to be adults they become less active and put on weight. Please make sure Zoii doesn't have intestinal parasites by bringing in a fecal sample to your veterinarian. If she's healthy and active with a shiny coat then I'm not concerned about her weight. Zoii is beautiful! It is hard to tell exactly in the picture since she is fluffy, but she doesn't look underweight to me. There are a couple of easy ways to make sure she is at her ideal weight. One is that you should be able to run your fingers across her ribs and feel them without pushing in at all. If you can see them, she is too thin. When you look down on her from above when she is standing, she should have a little indent at her waist. Cats will also normally have a small fat pad at the back part of their bellies (between the back legs). These are all things to watch for so you know you are keeping her at a healthy weight.
