Why is my new kitten timid, not eating, drinking, or using litter?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 22 days old | 2 lbs

Does my new kitten have an underlying medical health problem? So I just received my new kitten from a friend who was giving them away. As expected, he is very timid, often hiding his little head in the cusion between his bed. I know this is quite common but he seems to be excessively timid and has not eaten or has been hydrating whatsoever. Nor has he urinated or pooped. Before settling here, he did eat; however still tried to hide a lot. I'm getting concerned for his mental and physical health.

Your kitten is way too young to be away from its mommy. It would benefit him if you could take him back to your friend and leave him with his mother for another 3 or 4 weeks. While kittens start eating solid food at around 5-6 weeks, they should still benefit from mother's milk. Suckling also has a psychological benefit as kittes can run to mommy when something scares them. Shadow is also likely to be extremely scared and lonely in the new place with new smells. Try returning him to your friend for another 3-4 weeks and you will get a much brighter happier kitty back. Right now, you should keep him close to your body, where it is warm and where he can feel safe. Try to offer him wet (canned ) food warmed up, not dry food. Get some kitten milk and warm that up as well and let him lick it off your fingers. I hope your friend is willing to give Shadow another few weeks with his mom.

    Poor Baby! He is likely just really scared from the change of environment and from being away from his family. I would make sure he has access to food, water and even some canned food overnight to see if he will come out of his hiding place while you all sleep. I would not chase him or mess with him right now. If he continues to not eat or if you are worried, I would have your vet take a look at him to ensure he isn't sick. With time, he will likely come out of his shell some but he may never be an extremely social cat. I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Shadow. What a cutie! He will need to eat a kitten formula of dry or canned food. It is normally wise to do a gradual diet change. However, it does not sound like he is eating the formula you have well. In this case, it will be fine to just offer him a kitten version. You can try adding warm water to the food. It may make it more appealing to him. If his appetite stays low, he will need to see a veterinarian to ensure there is not an illness present. I hope this information helps!

If the kitten is only 15 days old it should be on a completely liquid diet of formula (KMR or another kitten replacer) as it is way too young to be eating any solid food. Once the kitten is about a month old you can start to introduce solid foods such as wet kitten food mixed with a slurry of the formula and then start weaning to more solid foods from there. The kitten likely also doesn't know how to properly use the bathroom yet, so using a warm washcloth on its bottom can help stimulate it to go much like a mother cat would do. Once it is a bit older you can start bringing it to a litter box as well. New kitten from shelter won't eat or drink much. Is this normal?
Moving to a new home can be very scary for new pets. Bring Claymore the food and water and put them next to his hiding area (if he is under the bed, put the dishes under the bed). Also bring in his litter box close to the area. Giver him a few days to get use to things. Keep the environment calm and don't allow him to be hounded by other pets or children until he is more comfortable. My new adopted kitten is underweight and not eating. What to do?
He is still very young and misses his mommy and his siblings. You should feed him canned kitten food, as kibble is still too hard and a kitten cannot eat enough of it. Feed him small portions 4-5 times a day and feed as much as he wants to eat, ie refill the bowl a little bit at a time. Make sure water is available but not next to the food. It needs to be about 6 feet away from the food bowl. At this age (71 days) he should weigh a little over 1kg, or 2.3lbs

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Congrats on your new baby! Sometimes when animals come to a new house they are scared and need time to adjust. For a kitten, I recommend placing them in one room with the litter box, food and water. When they get used to that room then open the door and let them explore, but leave everything in that room. Then as they get used to their new house get the food, water and litter box where you want it. At 8 weeks old Ash should be eating kitten food. Try dry and canned and see if he has a preference. Sit with him and encourage him to eat. Place him in the litter box a few times. If he still isn't eating or using the box by 48 hours then I would recommend you have him evaluated. Hopefully he just needs a bit more time! Good luck!

It may take your new kitten time to get used to her new surroundings. Try keeping her in a smaller area, like a bathroom, with her littler box and food/water. Being in closer proximity to them may encourage her to eat and use the box. You may also want to try offering her canned kitten food, as opposed to kibble. This may encourage her to eat more. When she does eventually defecate, if it is outside of the box, place the stool inside the box to help her learn where to go. If these tips are not working and your kitten is still refusing to eat or drink, you may want to consider taking her in to the vet to be checked out. I hope this helps. Hello. I do not think you have too much to worry about just yet. There is always an adjustment period when a young pet comes into a new home, especially if the kitten was just taken from its mother & siblings. Give Milo a few days to adjust by allowing him to explore & become comfortable. Have him examined as soon as possible by your veterinarian to make sure he is healthy, has no intestinal parasites or external parasites like fleas or ear mites. He is old enough to start his kitten vaccinations, but I do recommend having him check for the feline leukemia/feline immunodeficiency virus at his first visit, too.
