My 6-month-old kitten's bottom looks swollen and out. Is this normal?

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Luna is super cute! I agree that her anus is more "poochy" than a normal cat. It could be from intestinal parasites, because she is so thin or it could be normal for her. Your Vet can take a look when you bring her in for her first set of shots and deworming. Bring a stool sample. I bet once she puts on weight, starts eating a good diet and is dewormed it will look more normal back there! I hope this helps and good luck!

Luckily it looks like her anus is just swollen and red causing it to protrude. I don't see any sign of a prolapse thankfully. Try and keep it clean and comfortable until you can get to the vet tomorrow.

Jasper probably needs to be dewormed, as this is a very common problem in young cats & kittens. Once dewormed, the swelling & bowel movements should normalize. Take care.

Swelling of the anus/rectum could be due to constipation/hard stools, anal gland issues, allergies, irritation, or other problems. You would need to have the area looked at by your vet to determine what is going on and get the appropriate treatment. Be sure to let your vet known of any other issues you may have seen such as changes in appetite, energy levels, stool habits, etc. You can also use an Elizabethan (cone) collar to prevent your cat from licking/chewing at the affected area if it is bothersome until you can get to your vet.

It will go down one the stools become normal, i suspect at the moment he is suffering from diarrhea and this is why the anus looks like that, once the stools become normal again the anus will recover.

The herniation is usually fat through the body wall. Sometimes they can be pushed in (but come back out) or are permanently out. We usually fix them easily when they are spayed. I recommend that you have Luna evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Therapy would be based on findings. Good luck!
