Why is my kitten stumbling after Hartz ear mite and worm meds?

Hi there. Poor Chloe! Even adult cats with a high ear mite load often respond similarly-there is intense itch with the mite die off as well as the ear itself often have some open wounds from them-the medication will burn. If Chloe is having any true neurological signs like seizures, intense shaking, strange looking pupils, etc-best to get her to an emergency room right away for treatment. If you see nothing of this matter the side effects should subside soon. Hope this helps, my best to you and Chloe.

Poor Zoey! Unfortunately, the video will not load on the Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach forum, but I can get a sense for her abnormal gait from your description and the pictures. My first concern would be that Zoey may have cerebellar hypoplasia, but meningitis, toxoplasmosis, congenital lysosomal storage diseases, FIP, FIV, FeLV or spinal cord lesions are all possible. If it has not yet been done, ask your vet about performing a blood test for FIV and FeLV (feline leukemia). Otherwise, hopefully they are able to obtain further insight from a veterinary neurologist or internal medicine specialist. I hope that all goes well!

Please take Chunky monkey to the vet immediately. It sounds like she may be having neurologic symptoms, which could be due to low blood sugar associated with not eating and drinking enough due to being sick with a uri, trauma due to the accident you described, or other causes. This is potentially deadly, and your kitten should be seen right away to assess for dehydration and signs of trauma, and address the cause of her weakness. There may also be other underlying neurologic causes for her condition, and a veterinarian can help determine the cause and start treatment . Good luck!

Poor girl. I suspect she is having a mild reaction to the Hartz flea medication. Unfortunately, this particular flea prevention has been shown to have adverse effects in many cats that cause neurological issues stemming anywhere from muscle twitching to full on seizures. I would recommend rinsing the product off as best you can using Dawn dish detergent, followed by a soothing cat friendly conditioner from your local pet store to rehydrate the skin. And then a vet visit is best to get her fully evaluated to make sure she doesn't require any additional treatment (i..e muscle relaxer) or antihistamines. I hope that your fur baby Lucy is able to make a full and speedy recovery and its best to get her on a higher quality flea prevention (i.e Revolution, Cheristin, Advantage is ok) next time to limit adverse reactions in the future. It is more likely that Katniss's symptoms are related more to the ear cleaning than anything else, as there is no way a nail trim could cause neurological signs unless your cat was handled very roughly, & I hope this is not so. Anything placed in the ear could potentially cause enough irritation to result in the signs of vestibular syndrome. If no medications were instilled in the ears, then the symptoms should subside In 3-5 days. In addition to the medications prescribed, I might have added something for nausea ( like Cerenia ) just to make sure Katniss continues to eat well. Unfortunately, there is no strict timeline as to when she may totally recover, but if she is not significantly better by Monday, then I might be thinking about recommending a CAT scan or MRI to evaluate what is going on in her inner ear canal. Hopefully she will start to feel & act better with each passing day, but if not, you may need to pursue some advanced diagnostics. Unfortunately, without a diagnosis it's impossible to say what you need to do to help him - there are many things that can cause a drunken, uncoordinated gait in a kitten this age, and all of these different problems would require different treatments. If the kitten has been to the vet, I would recommend asking him/her what they think is causing the abnormal gait. The kitten may have a birth defect called cerebellar hypoplasia, which is a benign condition that does not require any treatment, or could have a serious neurologic problem such as toxoplasmosis, meningitis, or even a toxicity of some kind (antifreeze, etc.) - these issues are much more serious, and would require prescription medication or even hospitalization to treat appropriately.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If all you are seeing is some ear and paw twitching and both are eating and drinking I don't think they need to be seen by a Vet.
