My baby kitten is sneezing with dirty eyes. What can I give her?

There is a baby kitten that my mother found last week, i think its 1month old or less. She has a cold and keep on sneezing and she has a dirty eyes and her hands is dirty too because she kept on cleaning her face so her hands became dirty. I jus want to know what medicine can she take so that her cold will be gone and her face became clean. Thank you very much!

Hello. If your kitten is sneezing and has discharge from her nose and eyes, this could be either viral or bacterial. If it is viral the discharge is usually clear and Baby Orange should still be eating/drinking and playing normally, unless she has a fever. If the discharge is yellow/cream/green then there is likely a bacterial component that requires antibiotics. Depending on your area there are different antibiotic choices for bacterial infections including amoxicillin/clavulanic acid or doxycycline. I would recommend having your kitten checked by a vet to see if antibiotics are required, and which is the best for the area you are in, and also to get a proper formulation and dose, as improper antibiotic use can make Baby Orange very sick. You need to take Blossom into the vet for treatment. She sounds quite ill, and the puss coming from her eyes indicate an eye infection which can only be treated by medications from the vet. Young kittens can be very fragile and go downhill quickly when sick, so it's best that she sees a vet right away to prevent that from happening. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

Some of these kittens will get viral infections that also affect the eye and can cause painful ulcers which can progress and dive deeper into the eye (which is not good). Lysine supplements for cats may help with viral infections in general but your kitten still needs to be examined today. The doctor needs to check the eye for an ulcer, scratch or perhaps a foreign object trapped under the eye lid. You must also protect the eye from any scratching with an elizabethan collar. Poor kitty. It sounds likely your kitty has an upper airway infection. She will need to see your vet to have this treated with a short course of antibiotics. My kitten has runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing. What to do until vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to an upper respiratory infection though something else like bilateral corneal ulcers or even dry eye are possible. This is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops and oral antibiotics and cats usually respond well to therapy. I recommend that you have Deimos evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If they agree that based on an examination, that seems to be the issue, they will likely prescribe medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, you may try to decrease his activity and rest him up which may help. Good luck and best wishes!

This is a classic presentation of a cat with an upper respiratory disease. These are often due to a virus that is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own - much like a cold with people). These can become worse and complicated with bacterial infections, so if Clover is having issues with congestion and has bad nose or eye discharge, then it will be best to take her to a vet for an accurate diagnosis and treatment. My kitten still has sneezing, runny eyes after antibiotics. What now?

Poor girl. Her current temperature is normal so that is good. I would suggest going back to the vet for another type of antibiotic. It seems the current one is not doing the trick, so another class of antibiotic may be all she needs to get this to clear up. I typically like to use Azithromycin in cats with upper respiratory disease because it is highly effective. You should also get Zazu on an anti-viral supplement daily to help boost her immune system. Look for Lysine powder from your local pet store and this should help her immunity and help prevent flare ups in the future, since most URI's are viral related in cats. I hope that your pet Zazu feels better soon! Take care.
