Is my 4-month-old male kitten sexually mature? Neuter early?

Hello. There really is no maximum age. He is likely starting to mature into an adult, so his appearance and behavior may start to change soon. If not neutered, his face will fatten, he may start marking with urine and may have some territorial aggression. He is the ideal age to neuter now, but it can be done at any time throughout his life as long as he is healthy enough for the anesthesia. Male cats will reach sexual maturity anytime after six months of age. They will want to roam more, can and do start fighting with each other and other cats for females and territory, and will urine mark their territory. This will include spraying it the house, which smells terrible and is almost impossible to get out. They can also become more aggressive. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about these behaviors, the only way to prevent them from happening is to have them neutered. If you don't want to do that, then you will have to understand that they can and will mark with urine in your home, they can be gone for days roaming around, and they will be more prone to fights and therefore injuries. It truly is better to have them neutered for their health and behavior, as well as for your home. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfotunately, male cats are sexually mature as young as 6 months of age and typically act accordingly starting about then. I do not expect his “tomcat” behavior to stop until he is neutered or is geriatric (12+yrs). The behaviors could be especially bad any time there is an in-tact female anywhere nearby. Of course you can’t control that. Temporary distraction with toys, training, laser pointer, etc. may or may not work. Long story short, do yourself a favor and get him neutered sooner rather than later. Best wishes to you and Fuego!

When they groom around their penis it can become erect. It may also be time to get him neutered. If he is excessively grooming down there he should see a Vet and have his urine tested. If you put him with female cats and they did not mate then that means the females were not in heat. The female needs to be in heat in order to allow the male to breed. If you do not want to breed Oreo then it is best to neuter him. I hope this answers your question. I wish you the best!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Bubba. Yes, it is possible and this could be behavioral or medical in nature. It's a little early for a behavioral spraying but he could be having a medical problem that is contributing to this. Spraying means that he is hitting walls, vertical surfaces. If he is only hitting the flood or horizontal surfaces, this is just urinating inappropriately. I would advise getting him evaluated by your veterinarian. He may be having a problem with FLUTD or FIC. Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease or Feline Interstitial Cystitis. This has many causes including stress, infection, urinary crystals/stones which all lead to bladder inflammation among other changes. Your veterinarian will want to examine her and perform some tests including a urinalysis to see if there are signs of a medical problem. Sometimes blood tests are required to make sure the kidneys and internal organs are functioning properly. Once a diagnosis is made there are various ways to treat this including drugs to treat the stress, infection (if any), and the inflammation. Sometimes a special diet is advised if crystals are present. Or even surgery if urinary stones are actually present depending on the type of stones and how big/how many there are. Behavioral problems are assumed if the medical tests come back normal. These problems can be addressed by neutering, some medications and retraining the kitten/cat to use the litter box consistently again. Your veterinarian can help you assess all of this and make a sound treatment plan to get Bubba back on track. They may recommend neutering him soon. Good luck

Male cats that are neutered after they reach sexual maturity are more likely to continue to exhibit behaviors that were caused by testosterone even after they are neutered. These behaviors can include urine marking and humping types of behaviors. That is one of the reasons that we recommend neutering before sexual maturity. If the shelter neutered him before you adopted him, then I would not doubt that he is neutered, but you certainly can have your veterinarian examine him just to be on the safe side. Cats that have testosterone in their system will have physical characteristics that your veterinarian will be able to determine on exam. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
