Should I add my kitten's panleukopenia antibiotic to his IV drip?

I am so sorry to hear about Toffee! Unfortunately, panleukopenia virus is a nasty disease and many kittens do not survive. That being said, you do not need fancy medicine for it since it is a virus. The most important thing is keeping up with the hydration. Repeating iv fluids under the skin can help with this (ask your vet if s/he can teach you how, how much, how often.) Getting an antibiotic (oral or shot) is also important since Toffee’s immune system is very weak. Feed tiny amounts feequently is he is not vomiting. Sadly, even though we do all these things, many kittens do not survive. Best of luck to you and Toffee.

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear that your kitten is sick. To know if she truly has parvovirus (also called feline panleukopenia), she would need to be tested for it. If your veterinarian did not test her, then there's no way to know for sure if this is the problem or not. But, her symptoms certainly sound like they could be caused by this. And yes, she will urinate out the excess fluids from her IV drip.

Poor little one, I would recommend that he has fluids intravenously and medications through the drip until he starts to eat.. then you can start oral medications. If he is dehydrated already, as time goes by without eating, he will be getting worse. Hope you can have him rechecked and that something a little more intensive can be done for him. If it was longer than 14 days ago then it is no longer good. Is this formulation the same mg/ml as the one you got from the veterinarian? It is best for you to repost with that information so we can help you better. Honestly, though, if he is only sneezing, has no other symptoms and is eating/drinking well I would not bother with the antibiotics. Usually a URI is due to a mixed infection of bacteria and viruses - you cannot treat the viral portion with antibiotics and typically after 10 days the bacterial portion is under control. You are better off letting his own immune system kick in. I recommend you use something like Imuquin to help boost his immunity instead of using antibiotics. A high calorie liquid diet such as viyo recuperation or royal canin gastrointestinal liquid diets are the easiest for her to digest when recovering, as well as oral electrolyte (salt and sugar solutions) which can be offered for her to drink or syringe fed. This may be a virus and not a bacterial infection. If that's the case antibiotics will not help and the virus needs to run its course which can take up to two weeks. As long as she isn't getting worse, running a fever and is eating I would keep monitoring her. If at any time she does get worse or isn't getting any better after 7-10 days, I would call your veterinarian. Let her rest unless she wants to play. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Overdosing of antibiotics is usually not a huge deal. It can cause an upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea. I would monitor for these signs. I do recommend calling your local emergency clinic (or posting another question) including which antibiotic (Amoxyclav?, Doxycycline?, etc.), as this might change the answer and inducing vomiting might be recommended. Otherwise, just monitor for signs of an upset stomach and skip the next dose. Best of luck with Sumi!
