My 3-month-old kitten doesn't always bury her poop. Is this normal?

Beux may still need some assistance in the litter department so you may need to bring him there throughout the day to encourage him to use it. Using a scoop to bury any stools and to "dig" in the litter like a mother would show him how may also help teach him how to bury it. Very young kittens may also still need stimulation to go, and using a warm wet washcloth on his bottom while in the litter box may stimulate him to get going.

Simba may be going in the other cat's litter tray, and I would try to see if you can follow him around to see if you can catch him pooping in the other tray. Kittens do not necessarily poop right after a meal, and it could be he is pooping at night in the other tray while you are sleeping. Given that he is acting normal, I wouldn't be to concerned. If he wasn't pooping at all, you would see other signs lack of appetite, potentially vomiting, straining to poop, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, then I would be concerned and have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

I have seen my cats do this as well. There are a couple of reasons why Kooner may do this. It could be that she doesn't like the litter itself, so she doesn't scratch at it to cover her feces. It could be that she doesn't like the box itself, so she wants to leave it as soon as possible. She may also never learned to cover it up when she's done. As long as she is actually going in the box, it's really a non-issue that she doesn't cover up after she is done. I would not recommend changing her box or her litter, as cats are extremely particular about this box and litter, and changing it could stop her from using the litter box completely. I would not worry about it, and leave it be.

Hello. The stool is a little dry, but otherwise looks normal. You can try increasing the amount of fluids he takes in by offering low sodium broths or stocks, tuna water, & adding some canned wet food to his diet. Because of his underlying issues, he may just not be taking in enough water on his own, but you do not need to force water down him. Not covering things up is an individual trait in some cats. Some seem to want to dig all the litter out while others are content to leave things be on top. Most cats fall somewhere in the middle & do a pretty good job covering things. I have never thought it was some kind of dominance, especially in your case where your kitten is not even sexually mature. He may be more inclined to bury his waste as he matures. It's very possible this momma cat is just really good at cleaning up after her kittens. At a month of age, she should start taking them to the litter box and teaching them how to use it as well, so you may start to see an increase in waste there instead. Watching the momma cat to see if she is eating/cleaning up the waste can help alert you to if this is the case. If any of the kittens seem unwell, constipated, or don't seem to be urinating/defecating properly, scheduling a vet check to rule out any issues is always best.
