Rescued kitten has worms/mites. Is low energy normal after treatment?

I am concerned as well. While a kitten can have some lethargy after receiving vaccines and deworming treatments, it's not normal for that to last more than a day or two. If she is eating and drinking normally, then you can wait until the morning to have her seen by a vet by a health check. Should she not be eating or drinking normally, then I would have her seen by an ER vet tonight.

Some kittens will become lethargic if there is a high worm burden in their intestines. The sudden death of a large number of worms can slow things down in their GI tract and cause discomfort. If she goes longer than 24 hours without food, or is seen having vomiting or diarrhea, then Tessa should be re-evaluated by your vet.

This is very common after vaccines. Let him be alone tonight and let him rest. I would not be concerned unless he starts vomiting, having diarrhea, has hives or a swollen face. If any of these symptoms are noticed that I would contact your vet as this is likely a vaccine reaction. Also make sure he is still eating. He may not eat tonight but his appetite should pick up by tomorrow. If he isn't starting to act more normal in the next day or two, contact your vet for an exam.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing the cats, it is hard to say. I recommend taking them to the vet with a fresh stool sample to rule out other parasites. Not all deworming medications treat all intestinal parasites. If negative, I would have both cats tested for feline leukemia and FIV. These are infectious diseases that could cause poor growth. Some loss of appetite/lethargy can be normal after a deworming, especially if there was a heavy worm load that is now dying off. You can try to entice eating by offering some plain boiled chicken or wet food warmed up as cat's appetites are driven by smell. However, if it's been several days and Layla still isn't back to normal, isn't eating or drinking at all, or is very lethargic, it is best to let your vet know to make sure there isn't another underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry about little Zora. Yes, it can take some time for her body to heal. The blood transfusion probably saved her life, but now her bone marrow has to kick into high gear to replace those missing & destroyed red blood cells. It can take up to 3 weeks for her blood count to return & stay at a normal level. This does not mean she will be weak & lethargic the whole time, she should get stronger every day. Stay in close contact with your veterinarian, do not skip recheck visits, & keep her as protected as possible. Her immune system is pretty weak, not only from being so young, but from the anemia, so keep her indoors & away from any unvaccinated cats. With time, she should get well, & have a normal life. This behaviour could be due to fever, pain, intestinal worms and more. Please de-worm your kittens if they have not been dewormed in the last few days. If it does not make any difference, please take him to your local vets for an appointment.
