What's wrong with my kitten? Lethargic, no appetite, x-ray suspicious.

I'm sorry to hear Friday isn't feeling well. Gas pain can be very uncomfortable and could be what is making her lethargic. There are numerous underlying causes of gas and lethargy in kittens, and an exam can tell us a lot as to what is going on. I would be concerned about possible intestinal parasites, as many kittens are born with worms and need to be given a deworming medication to clear them out. She also could have a viral infection or a bacterial overgrowth of her intestinal tract that is causing the problems. The majority of owners should not be able to feel intestines in their pet, so I am worried that you are feeling something abnormal in her abdomen. Sometimes with inflammation the intestines will feel "ropey" when we palpate them. I think Friday needs to be seen by your vet for some supportive care (deworming, fluids, etc), and to try to figure out what the underlying cause is so she can get back on track.

It sounds like he is getting sick. Without additional clinical signs it is hard to say exactly what is causing his lethargy and decreased appetite but he could be starting with a respiratory virus or a gastrointestinal virus. He could also have parasites that need to be treated. If it continues than he should be examined by a vet to determine the cause. Your vet can run lab work to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. If he is unvaccinated, please discuss a vaccine plan with your vet once he has recovered from this illness.

The most common cause is usually intestinal parasite infection. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Amaru should be dewormed. This will likely need to be repeated in 2, 4 and 6 weeks. An exam can be done to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any pre-existing conditions. Consider having him tested for FeLV and FIV. This is done with a quick in-clinic blood test. Feed a food quality canned kitten food. If he checks out healthy, discuss an appropriate vaccination plan with your veterinarian.

Thank you for saving this kitten. If he is lethargic and not eating he should really see a veterinarian. A recently rescued kitten does not refuse food if they are healthy. I would recommend getting Mario evaluated by a veterinarian asap. They can test for Feline leukemia, check for intestinal parasites or see if Mario has an infection. In the mean time offer smelly canned kitten food to try to tempt his appetite.

Poor baby. It sounds to me like he needs additional medical attention. His pain control may not be adequate for his injuries, or he could be developing an infection. I would recommend taking him to an emergency vet clinic tonight to be assessed and his treatment adjusted.

If no abnormalities were found on the x-rays but she is still lethargic despite treatment, I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound to see if there are any other abnormalities and then go from there. In older cats, I worry about intestinal lymphoma but it is possible this could be inflammatory bowel disease as well. However, there is still additional testing that needs to be done to help rule out other causes of Stella's symptoms. Changing the diet to a prescription low fat intestinal diet like Hills low fat I/D may be something to consider as well but I would discuss this with your veterinarian first. Poor Little Bit! In a young cat an infectious disease would have to be high on the list. I would be suspicious that she could have the dry form of FIP, eventhough the bloodwork is not showing typical changes that usually occur with the disease. Unfortunately, FIP is difficult to diagnose but you could ask your vet about doing an xray and ultrasound of her abdomen to look for changes. Hope she feels better soon!
